Spawn?
    #327423 - 05/27/01 09:53 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

Friend is having very bad luck with spawning store bought substances, and has had only good results with wild pure cow and horse manure. Friend was wondering if there is something readily available nationwide in the U.S. that would make a good spawning material that can be store bought. Maybe a brand of compost or something that can be obtained easily without ordering or searching? Thanx.......

I just got some "Mushroom Compost" today. I'll let ya know.

I would think that any sort of organic compost would do OK.

Worm castings on straw kick ass. Pasturized both 175 for an hour then mixed w/crumbled cakes. Lots of shrooms off 1 loaf pan full cased in coco fiber.

I've heard great things about worm castings but can you go out to Walmart or Home Depot and grab some? Thanx

I haven't seen worm castings sold anywhere except a store that that specialized in pot growing, the Urban garden store. It must be sold other places, check for it on the web some organic gardening site must sell it.

You have to watch the brand, as quality of castings make a huge difference. Some companies will sell 'earthworm castings' which is actually castings adulterated with varying amounts of questionable quality compost/soil.
The last batch of castings I bought **I think** was a 'Black Gold'? brand. It was utterly a disaster, stunk worse than anything.
The mushroompeople castings have had rave reviews, but require online ordering.

The other way to go is wheat straw [not hay cob or anything with grain attached]. It is very contam resistant, will support decent fruiting, but potency apparantly will vary depending on the amount of grain you use to inoculate it.
Apparantly Wallmart has small bails in the arts&crafts section, though I've never found it. I went ahead and bought a bail of hay which cost around 6 bucks and is a lifetime supply for a few hobbyists.

Optimally, you mix castings/compost/dung with straw for the benefits of bulking up [straw] and nutrition. I'd agree with the poster who colonizes the castings/etc first, and use this to expand onto straw.

Be sure to start with good clean spawn, and pasteurize the bulk stuff properly; get moisture content right. If you get those things prepared right, trays colonize very fast.

The above information is complete fiction.

Oh, I'd avoid the store bought 'steer manure'; every type I've tried has failed. The grain will fuzz out with new growth but it won't grow into the stuff. . .almost like the manure has antifungal properties or something.
A lot of store-bought compost is the same way, they've composted it in such a way that the nutrients supporting fungal growth have already been used up.
A great example is some 'mushroom compost'. . .it can actually be the left-over substrate from a mushroom farm! So potentially, you're using substrate that has already been colonized and flushed once or twice by other mushrooms!

I have to agree on the wild-cowpies. In addition to being in one solid piece [not trampled] they colonize incredibly well. Have to use pretty quickly after bringing inside, at least around here. . . dung flies can hatch indoors which is very very bad.

No doubt Suntzu.. I didn't fully read the bag until I got home. "MUSHROOM COMPOST" IS NO GOOD FOR GROWING MUSHROOMS!! I hope everyone heard that. My bags already went into the garden..

Here is what the bag said. I read the first paragraph at the store, the second at home. :( Seems a little misleading to me.

There's these monkeys that live in the trees by my house that have had great results with this "Farm Manure" ... it's made up of COW/HORSE/SHEEP poo mixed w/ a bit of compost...it's PH is 2-1-2.... anyway the monkeys forgot to give me the name of this stuff but i'll check tonight! peace
