slow colonisation due to high humidity?
    #3291736 - 10/29/04 12:18 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

hi guys i have very slow colobisation times even though my incubator temp is ~82F .
i have a tub in tub incubator. the tub with the water doesnt have a lid on. only my tub with the jars/casings has a lid. even though i can see lots of moisture in there.
cmaybe is this a problem that slows down dolonisation??
()no hygrometer:-( )

thanks

very unlikely. Actually, I would go as far as saying flat out no.

Most likely the jars were packed or you have some contam. At least that's what I'd think. I fluff my substrate a lot like whipping eggs before I load the jars. Might want to try to fluff and not packing next time.

no contams. they are colonising well buy a little slowly.
i have experience in many contams and can recognise them.

Also i always make my substrate as fluffy as i can,i never pack.

my main question is if the high humidity in the incubation period slows down mycelium growth

no.  usually the humidity inside the jar will far surpass any humidity you can provide in any incubator.  Only thing a lot of humidity can do is condensation dripping through the holes.  In which you'll have problem with contamination before anything else.

Just wait it out. Time will tell

Your problem isn't humidity... its oxygen.  Your cakes can't breathe right now.  If you are using mason jars, punch a few holes in the lid (if you used the pf tek, then you would already have this), and slowly turn the jars upside down onto the lid.  Leave it like that and in a few days you'll see a noticable improvement.  Just leave it like that til there fully colonized.

I can testify to the efficacy of turning the jars.

I had a stubborn non-colonizer, flipped the jar, and in a few days it was totally colonized.

I am not sure if this was due to gravity or increased oxygen accessibility since I did have three holes in the lid..

but it worked!
