Wierd smell?
    #3290711 - 10/28/04 05:45 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

About three days ago I birthed 8 cakes, two of which I made casings out of. Well somehow today one of my two casing fell over shaking it up a little bit. I decided to take of the lid to make sure everything was ok and I noticed a strange odor (not like mushroom). It doesn't smell sour but almost sweet, sorta like hand soap would smell. Just to make sure I opened the second casing to verify and there was just a slight hint of mushroom, and some myc pokin out .

My question is this, is that casing ok or is that smell a bad sign? If its not good I'm kinda glad it fell over

it most likely is a bacterial contam... try fruiting them in a seperate area
and see what happens... dont mind me, I'm a contam grower...

weird smell = contam 99.9% of the time. sometimes the mycelium will overcome the contaminate, but don't risk your other casings/cakes and move it to another fruiting chamber if you want to risk it. I've had a casing fight against the meanie greenie and win, as well as bread mold. it's all up to you if you want to give that casing the TLC and try to help it overcome or if you'd rather just throw it out and start over.

props to you prisoner for playing doctor to your casings as well.

Is it ok to eat mushrooms that grew from a casing that was previously contaminated with bacteria?

alright. i'd never advise someone to eat mushrooms off of a contaminated casing seeing as some contaminates can make you sick (IE - pooing and puking repeatedly after you eat the mushrooms... bad trip) or kill you.

i have, however, eaten mushrooms off of a casing where i fought off green mold with a little surgery and some salt. i've also seen mycelium take over a bit of bacterial contam in a jar and not had a problem with it yet.
