Hey I can't find any Oyster Shells, for a 50/50 casing I wonder if this will cause a problem?

calcium carbonate... common chalk is an acceptable substitute, you can
also try pet stores in the bird department, there should be some there

you can also use eggshells or lime... not the fruit, the soil suppliment

your pH won't be just right on the casing layer. your mushies will be happier if you get the ph right... just be sure to get a pH tester.

as for the pH testing, you can get litmus paper (don't know how well that works) or get an electronic pH tester from a garden store.

You can't really use a digital pH meter on substrate, though.... you would have to test runoff.

litmus paper is a little less accurate, but probably easier to deal with... for measuring the pH of semi-solids anyway.
