A. Muscaria ID needed
    #3291070 - 10/28/04 07:33 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I found this guy outside in the parking lot of my apartment in some mulch/dirt.It was kicked over, I dont even know if that is where it grew. As far as I know someone could have picked it somewhere else and threw it there. The mushroom smells sweeter to me that any other mushroom I have found. Found in Seattle area. Can someone make a positive ID on it, or do you need more info.

most definately an Amanita, but i don't understand why people want to eat these. The trip is very unpleasurable!

Like how? Is it just intense, or does it make you feel sick?

it is adverse effects for each person.. im planning to eat some despite the hype.. i heard that a hit of herb will kill any nausea you feel.. i dont understand why peoples personal experiences are so heavily brought amongst others.. be smart eat minimally.. dont be stupid.. and im sure one can have many beautiful visions .. considering that the fly agaric is one of our most ancient sacriments and is reaching out to all of us in every country i dont think that we should condemn it and/or influence others not to eat it at all.. influencing people to be smart about it is a different story

Phishhead, from the weilii thread, says you can peal the skin off of the amanita let it dry then smoke it. He says it gives an instant feeling of euphoria. This is something I might want to try. Anyone else heard of smoking the skins?

I read on this site, "And remember to first identify Amanita muscaria from its more deadly relatives, A. phalloides, A. ocreata, A. virosa, and A. verna, before gathering on your own. Each of these potentially deadly species can be differentiated from Amanita muscaria by their saclike volva." Do you see that on the picture above?

I do not see concentric rings on your mushroom. I don't think it's Amanita muscaria. Concentric rings are one of the essential features for IDing this mushroom.

What about A. Phalloides, A. Ocreata, A. Virosa, A. Verna, they were all listed underneath A. Muscaria notes in the A. Muscaria section, and again they said they were identified by their saclike volva.

The four you just said have completely different colors, I think the only very deadly Muscaria look-alike would be Aminita Regalis, correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, it certainly looks like A. muscaria, but it does not have concentric rings, which is one of the key characteristics for this species. Perhaps they were rubbed off.

I believe ToxicMan said there are some lookalikes for A. muscaria.

rubescens looks very much liek them, but the books say they often are a pinking hugh where teh muscarias are white. tey are red with white spots, but the books also consider them edibles. google it, they are pretty close. they are also missing the rings gumby speaks of, so maybe thats them? perhaps that is what peopel are eating when they dont trip?

I have tried this. A few nights ago. My advice would be not to do it unless you have a large amount or good supply of these. I felt nice, just like being stoned but a bit more dreamy. That was after smoking about 4cms squared of the skin (size was when fresh). My 2 friends who also did it had different results. 1 had no effect, on had a small effect. I usually trip with more intensity than both of them when eating though.

This was my first experience with Amanitas. It looked the same as yours. Check out the information area on Muscarias, it shows you the only one (in my opinion) that could be confused. Yours has the yellow colour under the skin where i believ the fake one is more pink.

I am eating mine on Sat so i'll let you know how it goes. Be sure to check how to prepare it though. You need to cook it, not eat it fresh but check the info on this site for more accurate details.

Oh yes, also once i had dried and powdered the whole thing, i smoked it again. I didn't notice a difference from just smoking the skin (which is supposed to be stronger).

I've smoked the dried skins before. Smoke it out of something you dont use for herb that often that shit reeks. It hit me after 4 hits or so I started feeling kinda giddy and lazy. Lasted couple hours ten I felt unpleasant and sick...didnt really care for it.

I know of no other Amanitas with crimson red caps...none.

I've seen many amanita's with their scales washed away.

The detail of the volva was obviously lacking, but the specimen was also heavily handled.
