i have been trying the perlite, but my humidity gauge only registered up to 50%. and i live in probably the dryest places around, the mojave desert(not by choice). anyone got any suggestions? i even have a humidifier inside the terrarium right now, and still not much difference. just wet cakes.

Buy a good hygrometer. Yours must be inaccurate.

i also have a brand new hygrometer. one that mounts outside of the terrarrium, and with a probe to mount inside. and at best only get around 50%. believe me, i have been trying everything i have learned so far to reach 90+%, and no results.

My guess is the temperature in your terrarium is too hot making it hard for the air to hold moisture. If it is hot and dry out, you could evaporate water from the outside of the terrarium to cool the inside.

my friend also has a thermometer/hygrometer combo with a sensor. However, he quickly found that the external sensor DOES NOT READ HUMIDITY. Try placing the entire unit in the terrarium and give it a few..60 minutes.. see if the humidity reading doesn't rise to 99%. :) For what it's worth, he lives in an even drier environment than you and is worried about too much humidity instead of not enough with just some perllite and hardly any misting.Edited by synaptic on 05/29/01 11:44 PM.

i fell for that same scam. got the baby home and realized the probe only measured temp. has your friend had any problems with the unit malfuncitioning in the 99% humidity environment??
