My Jet Black Spore Print
    #3287775 - 10/28/04 12:31 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

The print I took looks like a solid, jet black, donut of goo. It seems like every time I try to take a print of this particular species it?s always so slimy (the spores, not the cap) that it comes out looking solid (no spore lines). I found the mushrooms below some bushes in my front yard and I?m pretty sure they were growing on a bed of wood chips (I?ll double-check in the morning). I found a few small clusters forming around the area as well.

One thing I noticed right away was that fact that they looked identical to some specimens I found when I was up in Amherst, Mass. this summer. These however were growing on hay bales and most were found already dead and falling apart.

When I handled them I usually got some of its black spore goo on me, just like with these. Another characteristic I noticed was that the stem was hollow like a straw. At the time I thought they might be Pan Subs but I was never sure.

That particular species grows in both Mass. and NJ and that?s exactly where I found them. A lot of them had caps with the edges turned up making it look almost like a contineous eyelash (separated black fibers). While observing the gills I noted the contrasting coloured ring around the edge. It looked as though the gills started out black and at the very edge turned a sort of whitish-grey.

Luckily I found some pics of the specimens I found this summer. I?d take pictures of the ones I found in my yard but some joo has my $500 Cyber-shot digital camera and I won?t be getting it back for a few more days. Unluckily I can only upload 400KB worth of images every 24 hours and I don?t have a single pic under 1MB (damn mega-pixels).

Does my description sound familiar at all? I?ll try to post some pics ASAP.

Thanks,
ShroomNoob03

In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion.

You probably have inky caps (Coprinus sp.). pan subbs are are out of season right now. It is too gcold for them to fruit. They are a spring and early fall shroom.

What your describing in definetly a Coprinus species. They arent of any use.

Its most likely too cold for Pan. subbalteatus to be growing in New Jersey, like MJ said. However, here in California, I dont see them until winter..heh.

Aren't of any use?? Well, not psychoactive, but Coprinus has one of the very best edibles, in my opinion, the Shaggy Mane (Coprinus Comatus). I have made numerous U-turns while driving to grab a bunch of these for dinner. As a side note, that black goo, when diluted, was in fact actually used as an ink at one time by royalty.
