Montana has a strong anti-government and independent streak. It heavily backed independent presidential candidate Ross Perot in both 1992 and 1996 before its republican leanings came through in 2000, with George W Bush favoured by a wide margin. The state does have strong democratic areas such as Butte and the university community of Missoula but in recent years has also become known for its resident seperatists and anti-government militias. The big sky state is America's fourth largest geographically but one of its least populated. It has 65 million acres of national forests and public lands.
