Smell...
    #3287808 - 10/28/04 12:53 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I am smelling something like sourness coming from my growbox so I checked my cakes and I don't see anything that looks like contam.

What should I check for with this smell or is it just my box that has become moist that smells?

That sour smell would be the smell of bacterial contamination, the infected cakes have gotta go. You cant see it, but if its a really strong sour smell, thats what it is for sure/

Are all of them contaminated?

Hard to say, though bacteria will smell, the ones infected the most will smell very strongly of it. You may be able to isolate some clean ones and salvage a flush from them, but I would say your chances aren't very high though...

Ok, if the bacteria is present will I get a flush? Also, how do you think they got it?

Fermentation & Bacterial contamination
This may help, just do a search on bacterial contamination.

You should not jump to conclusions like that. A sour smell can definatly be bacteria but perilite and geolite can also emit a smell that can be described as sour. Myc will generally smell like fresh mushrooms which can be odd if you aren't used to it. People describe smells differently then you sometimes and you might be able to distiguish a sour bacterial smell from an odd perilite smell (if you even bother with such things) however some people have a hard time describing it. If you get a flush of healthy looking mushrooms on healthy looking cakes then you should be ok. If all cakes look fine upon inspection, leave them as is. If any start to look rotten, brown, slimy or particular cakes smell sour instead of just the chamber, seperate them or toss them.

how long have you had the same perlite in your container? try switching the perlite after the flush and i bet the smell will go away. if not it could be bacteria.

I checked all of the cakes today and noticed that the jar lids they were sitting on had rusted. I changed the lids and cleaned the container. When I changed the lids the smell was gone... What do you think? Is my problem gone?

What're you using instead of perlite?
