growth question
    #3288466 - 10/28/04 10:53 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

every time my cakes start to pin and grow they seem to only grow from the top layer of vermiculite. i would think that i would get a bigger yield if they also grew from the mycelium. is there any reason for this? can i even do anything to get them to also grow from the mycelium? thanks

Are you dunking your cakes and then rolling in vermiculite, then misting the vermiculite until it's moist all the way around your cakes?

Mine always seem to start pinning from the top and bottom, but then within 24 hours there are pins coming from everywhere. I'll try to take a picture of mine today on my lunch hour.

This sounds like some good advice for when my cakes are ready to be cased! So after they're ready you 'dunk' them (let them sit in water for 12 hours or so and all that) and then also have the whole vermiculite casing moist?

The way I do it is this:

When my cake is 100% colonized I open the jar in a sterile environment, carefully remove as much of the dry verm layer as I can and then slowly apply some distilled or purified water to the jar until my cake can be fully submerged in it. I then dip a sewing needle in H2O2 or wash it with anti-bacterial soap (make sure to clean it off real well) and then stick it in the top of my cake. Return the lid to the jar and the pin will hold the cake fully submerged.

After it's been in it's dunk for roughly 24 hours I dump out some vermiculite on an oven pan, preheat the oven to 250 degrees and then throw the vermiculite in for 10 minutes after the oven has hit 250.

Take the pan out of the oven, put it on a sterile counter and let it cool to room temperature. Open your jar, carefully drain the water and then remove your cake with the utmost care. Place it in the dry verm that's on the pan and VERY gently roll it through the verm until you have a lot of it stuck to the sides of your cake.

Place it on whatever you are going to put it on in the terrarium and place it in your terrarium. Mist until the vermiculite is moist (not soaking wet).
