steam sterilizing for an hour for PF jars is a time proven Tek. It could be that contamination came from somewhere else. But if you want to, you can buy a PC or you can just use the partial sterilization method(steam sterilize for 1 hour each day for 3 days)

Good luck.

let's do some checks..

1. did you steam sterilze at boiling temperature(there has to be at least gentle boiling) for at least 1 hour.
2. you are using BRF(brown rice flour)?
3. Did you have foil over the top when you steam sterilized?
4. Did you tape the holes when you steam sterilized?
5. Do you have at least 1/4" dry vermiculite(not the BRF/verm mixtures, but straight verm and not even a spec of flour on this verm)
6. Did you sterilize the needles between inoculation sites?
7. Is your spore syringe prepared using sterile techiques?
8. Did you replace the foil back on after inoculation using the same sterilized foil?
9. When you were preparing the jars, did you make sure to wipe off the top 1/4" of the jar clean of ANY BRF/verm mixture?

Just few of the many things to look for...

And also try this.. clean the coffee grinder really really well using alcohol. Let it dry with cover open. Grind the verm to fine grade. Use this fine verm as top layer to insulate contam. Also, a little thicker maybe 1/2 to 3/4" dry verm layer will give you additional security.

Anyways... you can always go buy a PC... but problem can be somewhere else. At least I think it is...

yeah i did it the same way you did it and i got 3 contams from a dirty needle, now i use a clean syringe for every inoc, but you can flame sterilize it.

lol. it's probably something you missed. I suggest you do a dry run(just walk through without actually doing anything... use some cheap substitude for mixing stuff like crumbled ramen noodles and such) and see where you could've introduced the contam. I know it takes time, but finding the source of the problem will definitely increase your chances of success.

good luck

Sam

How long did you steam for? If you steamed for a good hour or two it must just be a bad syringe.

Its most likly your sterility. If your environment is not clean, your jars will be contamed. Proper sterilization of EVERYTHING is extreamly important.

A syringe is always a possiblity but I find more often is due to improper sterilization procedures.

Yeah, dont do it

You need a PC to work with whole grains such as millet or popcorn.

You can look up fractional sterilization, big pain in the ass though. A PC's only like 30 bucks off ebay shipped for the big ass ones that do 10 quart jars at once..

Untrue

I had 3/3 Quart WBS jars that were successful when I did them a day before I got my pressure cooker.

I boiled them for an hour and 15. Worked just fine.

People have also successfully grown without sterilizing at all. But the chances of success drop insanely. Obviously your chances are much higher than 'that' but from what I've read simply boiling grain doesn't have a high enough success ratio.

I have always steamed mine and never got any contams. i steam them for 1.5 hours. make sure you are keeping enough water in the pot throughout the process. you might have to add water. i forgot to check one time and by the time it was done there was no water left in the pot at all.

:nonono:
so are you saying that we all wasted our money on a pc?
how many times have you done this?
i think it is bad advice to tell some one to steam grains.....never tried it though(as kramer does all the growing)... so you would know more than i do about steaming grains.... :nonono:

I think Floyd was talking about pf tek, I am a rookie but I steam sterilized with wax paper rubber banded around the tops to keep water out, and my myc looks great thus far nice and thick, no contams yet, don't want to jinx myself though.
