substrate question...
    #3285977 - 10/27/04 08:15 PM (12 years, 5 months ago)

Well... While randomly bored a while ago, I PCed/inoculated/colonized a couple half pint jars and cased them with some left over casing material... Ended up neglecting and forgetting the tiny casing, and it dried up too much for any shrooms to grow... So I gave it to a friend's older brother to do whatever he wanted with it (he knows dick all about cultivation, but why not; I thought it was hopeless). Anyways, he goes, fills a fair-sized bowl with random soil half way, puts in the little myco-brick, covers it with s'more soil, waters and leaves it... Sure enough within 4 days shrooms start popping up, and in the end he comes out with 10 fair sized little buddies. He had the bowl in open air in his room with no air filtration or ANYTHING.. Anyways as his first flush has just finished I got it from him, and have broken up the myco-brick inside and mixed it with the soil, then put it into my incubator to let it properly colonize... Any good ideas/input anyone can add? I'm not sure random garden soil is the best substrate...

Luck.
Don't count on it to happen repeatedly.

Luck indeed... But as it seems to have started colonizing, any ideas as to what I can do to try and continue this luck?

They fruited from the substrate you initially inoculated. Your friend "cased" them.
Now you are adding more casing material to it.
I am not saying it is impossible you will get any fruits, but it is rather unlikely.

Better start anew and case yourself properly.

So the potting soil has no nutrients and is only acting as a casing then?

depends on which soil you got.  Most potting soil have nutes.  not necessarily the right type to grow shrooms, but they usually have nutes to harbour contam very well.
