Best humidification technique for casings?
    #3284721 - 10/27/04 04:22 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I'm starting my second culture and I'm going to use a casing tek.
I used cakes before and sprayed them for humidity and didn't have
any problems, but I am definitely looking for a more automated system. I have heard that using an Ultra Sonic humidifier for casings
is too much, that the humidity needs to be between 88-92% humidity. Though, I guess that could be adjusted by adding more control bottles right? Also, I was considering casing the entire bottom of
my terrarium, but that would eliminate the possibility of perlite humidification because it needs air to evaporate right?
What do you guys typically use to humidify your casings?

BTW I am using a 66 gal rubbermade container, so I don't think the moisture in the casing layer will suffice.

Get some wire mesh, line the bottom of your tub with perlite like usual. Measure the mesh 1" longer than the length and width of your tub and fold it into a stand, you may need something under it like poles to help support it, I am using square pieces of plastic I have that were cleaned and sterilized.

The mesh will make a nice flat bottom that you can sit your casings on above the perlite so that you can still humidify using this tek.

Good luck with your grow!

Just a few more questions:

How deep should I make the perlite layer?
How much water should I add to it?

How about this:
Case several trays to maximize the square footage as well as leave
room between the trays and the side so air flows over the perlite?
Good idea? Bad idea?

I use 1 1/2" or 2" perlite and 1/4" to 1/2" water under the perlite layer. The easiest way to measure your water is to dig a little hole in the perlite so you can see the bottom of the tub, then add water all over the perlite in different spots of your fruiting chamber until you see about 1/4" loose water in the hole.

Those flat tupperware containers that have like 2 1/2"-3" sides work rather well I believe for casing.

Nice tip. I'll be doing that as soon as poss. Maybe with a pair of clippers, clip sections to fold down as supports. Easy and cheap, 2 of my favourite words, which also happen to describe me to a tee
