alternatives to vermiculite?
    #3283033 -

hello everybody, i have problems in finding vermiculite in my place, and i'm not going to order it online (big packs = big postage expenses) so i'm looking for an alternative to vermiculite in a pf-based tek. i have read of somebody using COOKED RYE only in the cake, with no vermiculite at all, but i wonder how water will be given to micelium. are there any better recipes that exclude vermiculite? maybe using perlite, or peat, or expanded clay? and what about a vermiculite-free casing? can i use perlite/peat/clay instead? thanx in advance for your advices

thank you everybody, i have read about kitty litter used as top layer in the jars (for avoiding contaminants) but not as a part of the mix itself, wouldn't peat do the work? according to stamets peat absorbes half as much water as vermiculite does but... better than nothing.
drBhang, you mean wheat grains alone???

yes. in the cultivation faq under grains you can read how to prepare grains, just follow a rye recipe. Wheat sticks together and make cakes that holds. other grains are more shakeable are are not so good to make cakes.

Wow, I only spend around $2 for my vermiculite.  I feel your pain Lepiota

There are no specific garden stores anywhere in your city?  Best chance is to just call every botanical store in the phone book and ask the people who answer the phone if they know of any places that might have some.  Be sure to let them know it's a soil additive that helps retain moisture.  I had to go through a massive ordeal to find BRF in my area for my first grow not long ago.

Hope this helps atleast a little,

- Silven

i have done it already without success :-(
for avoiding the use of vermiculite, i think i will opt for pure rye grain+water (for the cake) and some (maybe) peat-based recipe for casing, without vermiculite in it. do you think this is a good idea? do you have any hints about cake and casing?

Hey Leipota, I share your dillemma. I can't find any vermiculite where I'm from either. I was gonna try using popcorn and case it. I have the same question as you though. Can I use perlite instead of vermiculite? Like perlite for the bottom layer and possibly a coir/perlite casing?

i'm glad i've found someone with the same problem that i have! i will go for rye, because it doesn't need to be pre-cooked as popcorn or birdseed do (please someone correct me if i'm wrong). i'm also looking for a vermiculite-free casing recipe. bottom layer might be not necessary, as for the top layer any advice is welcome! coir+perlite? coir alone? peat?
