The Power of Nightmares
    #3283663 - 10/27/04 12:09 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

'The Power of Nightmares' is a 3 part documentary series produced by the BBC. It covers the history of both the Neo-conservative and Islamist movements.

Part 1 was screened last week, and talks mainly about the cold war. Here is a torrent.

http://66.90.75.92/suprnova//torrents/2842/The_Power_Of_Nightmares_pt1-avi.torrent

Part 2 is on BBC2 tonight at 9:00pm, Part 3 is screened next week.

I found this to be very interesting, and would be very interested to hear a few American perspectives.

EDIT: Fix Broken Link.

This documentary is very interesting. I recommend everybody take a look at it. Even if you're a die hard neocon who refuse to accept what they say about that philosophy, there should be some interesting stuff about the history behind the current islamic terrorist movement.

If anybody get hold of a torrent to the second part, please post it here.

Well actually I couldn't download the files, I'll let you guys know when I do, but I have read a few articles on the series and it sounds totally ridiculous. We will see.

Actually, some of it sounds quite ridiculous. Like how Wolfowitz 'Team B' presented CIA propaganda about a supposed Soviet terrorist conspiracy as fact, even after the CIA came forward and admitted that these 'facts' were fabricated by them. That is ridiculous.

Please do watch it for yourself, I would like to here your views. In fact I found myself understanding the neo-con reasoning a little better, even agreeing with some of their aims, if not their methods.

Although something about the soundtrack made me think I was watching a John Carpenter movie

Indeed. I think the neoconservatives interviewed were given a good opportunity to explain their philosophy and reasoning. The programme presented them as idealists who ultimately wanted to do good.

I believe the soundtrack was Brian Eno by the way.

To let you know a bit more of what this series is about, I have transcribed the opening premise of this polemic.

"In the past politicians promised to create a better world. They had different ways of ac hiving this, but their power and authority came from the optimistic visions they offered their people. Those dreams failed, and today people have lost faith in ideologies. Increasing politicians are seen simply as managers of public life. But now they have discovered a new role that restores that power and authority. Instead of delivering dreams politicians now promise to protect us, from nightmares."

Hopefully Part 3 will be there sometime.. certainly the most eye opening program I've seen for a long time. And to think there's another four years of terror threat fantasies and lies to comes..

Should we be worried about the threat from organised terrorism or is it simply a phantom menace being used to stop society from falling apart?

In the past our politicians offered us dreams of a better world. Now they promise to protect us from nightmares.

The most frightening of these is the threat of an international terror network. But just as the dreams were not true, neither are these nightmares.

In a new series, the Power of Nightmares explores how the idea that we are threatened by a hidden and organised terrorist network is an illusion.

It is a myth that has spread unquestioned through politics, the security services and the international media.

THE POWER OF NIGHTMARES
Three part series
Wednesdays from 20 October
2100 BST on BBC Two

Part II: The Phantom Victory
Part III: The Shadows In The Cave
At the heart of the story are two groups: the American neo-conservatives and the radical Islamists.

Both were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world.

These two groups have changed the world but not in the way either intended.

Those with the darkest fears became the most powerful
Together they created today's nightmare vision of an organised terror network.

A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. Those with the darkest fears became the most powerful.

The rise of the politics of fear begins in 1949 with two men whose radical ideas would inspire the attack of 9/11 and influence the neo-conservative movement that dominates Washington.

Both these men believed that modern liberal freedoms were eroding the bonds that held society together.

The two movements they inspired set out, in their different ways, to rescue their societies from this decay. But in an age of growing disillusion with politics, the neo-conservatives turned to fear in order to pursue their vision.

They would create a hidden network of evil run by the Soviet Union that only they could see.

The Islamists were faced by the refusal of the masses to follow their dream and began to turn to terror to force the people to "see the truth"'.

The Power of Nightmares, a three part series begins on Wednesday, 20 October 2004 at 2100 BST on BBC Two with Baby It's Cold Outside.

I really enjoyed part I. I have part II & III downloaded - I'll watch them tonight.

This would never be broadcast in America.

I watched part 3 last night. Its quite sad how the neocons have helped create the terrorist myth and then used it to their own ends.

I'm downloading part 3 from uknova.com now. It's too bad that we'll get four more years of this.

What irks me is that these people are so upfront about their philosophy, yet if you confront the people who actually vote for them with it, they will consider you a crazed out conspiracy theorist.

It doesn't take more than to read the articles published at http://www.newamericancentury.org/ to realise that these people are up to some very sinister business. And they don't deny it. The proles just don't care as long as they can hate an enemy and promote their outdated 'Christian' morality.

correct. the neocons pretty much admit their own dishonesty in their literature and in interviews such as these. they are proudly playing the age-old Noble Lie Game as Part I pointed out. But if you say "WMD were a lie" their followers freak out and spin and spin.
