Cheap heating methods
    #3277135 -

I'm setting a grow operation up in my basement and the temperatures don't meet the optimum growth parameters for the mushrooms. Any idea what cheap household items can be used to bring the temperature up about 10 degrees? I have a few ideas, maybe just a standard lamp that get's hot or possibly a heat blanket underneath. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.  :mushroom2:

The bad thing about using lights is that they have to be on 24/7 to maintain the temps.

I bought a 55W heating pad at a thrift store for 3$, works great. That's about as cheap as you can get.

if your floor is concrete use a heating pad, you can also put it on the water
heater or the furnace if they are located there...

Well I must say 3 dollars is cheap enough escpecially when I think about what that three dollars spent is going to be doing for me. Thanks for the help.

i went to the thrift store today, but the bastards had 2 old heating pads in one oldass tank with some other accessories, and they wouldn't sell anything separate, only the whole set up for $30. bitches. i think what i'm going to try is getting a outlet timer, and hookup a light for each tank to it, then cycle it on and off to bring the temp up to 76-77, let if fall down a few degrees, then timer the lights back on to bring it up again. that way they wouldn't have to be on all the time. do mushrooms need a half/half lighting schedule like 12 on 12 off, or can it just be random as long as they get light at some time?

Tank?..

Try a few others. I went to 2 goodwills and 2 thrift stores before I found one. If all else fails, you can get new ones for around 15$ at wal-mart I believe.

As for the light, it doesen't matter, but you'll be advised to leave the light on for 12 hours a day until pinning, then cut back to 6..

I think it is more difficult than you think to heat up a Pod with a lightbulb, but it depends on the size of the tub and the ambient conditions too... so go ahead and give it a try.

I have a big old chest standing on one side with a regular lightbulb in the top hooked to a thermostat (the inside of the chest is covered in a thin foam insulation). I put a large styrofoam cooler (not for any particular reason I just didn't have the right size cardboard box) in it (without the top) and covered the cooler with garbage bags. Keeps the temperature pretty constant and I can fit an awful lot of jars in it. The chest closes tight, but theres a small hole in the front so I can whether the light is on without opening the chest.
Then again I'm incubating oyster mushrooms not shrooms in it, but the temperature is pretty similar and I could turn the thermostat up if I wanted to grow shrooms. Oh and another suggestion, maybe try an old waterbed heater.

A couple half gallon jars with h20/h202 and a couple submergible aquarium heaters.

Works great depending on the size of your terrarium.

I have a habit of referring to the rubbermaid as a 'tank'

The cheapest place i have found for a heating pad is longs, when i went they were on sale for 7.99. It seems to be working nicely. Right now i have the pad on top of the rubbermaid and my PC as an incubator on top of that. With the pad on medium, the rubbermaid stays about 72-75 and the incubator stays about 82-84. This method works best for me, i would think you could do the same thing with a rubbermaid on top of another if you wanted.

The lightbulb i'm using is actually the whole top piece of an old aquarium leaned on the back of the rubbermaid (its clear). So theres two pretty damn bright fish tank bulbs beaming and heating the rubbermaid. It seems to be working, albeit its only one tank.
