Dont limit yourself to alder chips. I have heard that cyans are more common in introduced alder chip areas, but the only place I have found them is in the wild, under blackberry bushes, and about 5 under a larger alder tree. The ground was a mix of buried wood and clumpy grass. The ground had swallowed a fallen branch or something. Everywhere I stepped the ground crunched.

I too have the same problem. I can't find alder chips anywhere, it sounds like there is so much more alder in seattle for some reason.

Just this season I've started looking for Cyans, but I was under the impression they were near impossible to find in the wild? I live near some logging roads and an old growth forests on the outskirts of Portland, and lots of alders everywhere, I guess I'll have to do some more exploring tomorrow!

We find them where i live under ferns. Don't know if they are called the same in US??? Basically these ferns grow for most of the year then die and make a very fibrous soil. They are always on north facing slopes for some reason? (Sunlight, warmth? anyone know?)

It is a real hunt to find them though, on your knees getting right in to greenery. At peak of the season you will prob get about 100 Grams fresh for an hour or 2's looking. I have only found them in one tiny spot though. About football field size. Unfortunately loooaaads of people know. They pick the pins and don't let them grow :frown:

My friend however has found a fantastic patch somewhere that no-body knows! Growing out of a rotting wood door! Sweet, we can let them grow to the max now without fear of losing them!

All in all its been a great week, found out about this new place, found 3 amanitas (didn't know they grew here) and found that liberty caps grow here! Its been a very wet october and between 3 of us we have about 550 grams of fresh cyans!!
