Quick Casing Question
    #3282846 - 10/27/04 04:41 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

First off would you use a bottom layer on a casing. If so does it have to be straight verm or can it be a mix of verm/coir? Thanks for the help

A bottom layer is not necessary. It's a matter of preference. I'm sure others can give you some more feedback.

What about verm/coir as a bottom layer?

verm/coir certainly can be used, some prefer it to straight verm. I don't know which, if either would benifit you more or even if it benifits you just being there. There never has been any conclusive results on this..

i use a bottom layer of 50/50+ just like I use a top layer. I just do this because this is what I've been told to do. I've not tried enough expieriments to determine the gains/losses from this.

i dont know i never used perlite. i never use a bottom casing layer (even though i should).
I just saw once a friend's casing fruit and popped up a hell lots of shrooms and i askwed him details about substr etc and he told me that used perlite as bottom casing layer.
anyway, the casing was VERY succesfull;-)

You could put sterilized dirt on the bottom of a casing, as long as you used a good casing mix up top and kept excellent conditions you could have a very successful casing. The bottom is just for excess water. Perilite is more expensive then verm though. Most messy too.

I'm still a big skeptic on perlite bottom. Perlite doesn't hold water well. It's more of a transfer medium. That means, there would have to be standing water on the bottom... and you know how we feel about standing water...

Nevertheless, I would still put big question mark on perlite for the time being.

As far as bottom layer, Just pack it nice and hard so the mycelium doesn't waste too much nute trying to grow through it. Mycelium doesn't know which way is up and it will grow to anywhere there is moisture and use that moisture. Use verm or casing mix. For me, coir is much much cheaper, so I use 60/40 mixture.

Good luck.

Sam
