Indoor Worm Composting
    #326325 - 05/26/01 01:43 PM (22 years, 10 months ago)

Today I began my first attempt ever at worm composting. I used a combination of alfalfa hay kob and cow dung as beeding. I pasturized the hay/dung combination in a hot water bath and allowed it to drain. That should provide enough initial moisture. I added ground seashells as grit to help with the worms digestive systems. I layered it about 9 inches in a large Sterlite brand plastic bin. I added about two pounds of red wiggler worms to the bedding along with nearly a pound of fresh vegetable scraps. In two months I should have rich compost. i recommend reading the book "worms eat my garbage"

Never read any vermiculture books, but we did have a red wriggler bin at my old house. It was outdoor and let me tell you, that was one maintenance-free, unplanned pile. We threw all kinds of nasty shit in there, they loved it, multiplied like crazy.
Are you formulating it specifically for indoor use? How's the smell? Do you have a mesh screen or some system to sift the finished product? A buddy is selling these systems, where you kind of pull and shake this screen every couple weeks or so and a tray underneath fills up with finished material. He hasn't mentioned the smell.

It's a nice idea for making one's own compost, very eco-friendly.

The above information is complete fiction.

I only eat veils

according to the book, smell shouldn't be a problem as long as i bury the scraps in the bedding. in 2 - 2 1/2 months the entire bedding and scraps should be broken down into humus, I will just push the compost aside and introduce new bedding and kitchen scraps and the worms will migrate from the "spent substrate" to the fresh substrate. the effortless nature of worm composting is what attracted me. Using grains in not recommend because of smell from contamination. I am using grain feed cow dung cause it probably does make a difference. I have used wonder warm brand worm castings as a bulk substrate, it works great and who knows what is it in. I figure a worm compost made of hay and cow dung will be great. I can't think of a better substrate for fruiting copelandia cyanescens on!

what would be the best substrates (ingredients) to use if one would like to get an ideal mushroom subs.,
for an end product?

thought these looked cool.Stackable too!

This is a room that 'used' to be filled wall to wall with mushrooms..... you can see the plastic still on the walls, there are about (guess) 10 rooms like this lined up in a row....

Heres one more, this is the industrial sized fan that was once used for large scale 'air exchange', no 'filter disks' and 'silicone sealed' rubbermaids here, nope, just straight wind blown through the room. Imagine a room like this filled with cubensis 8^)
