What organisms work with mycelium as opposed to compete?
    #3277820 - 10/26/04 12:29 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

As some of you may or may not know, the biology of soil is quite complex. Even before I started getting into mycology, I knew that there were organisms that worked synergistically within the soil, as opposed to competeing for nutrients and space. I've often wondered if there was something that you could inoculate your substrate with after PCing, but before you inoculate with mushroom spores. In the wild, there is no such thing as sterile medium.

The idea would be that the organism would colonize the substrate and instead of only one vector of contamination resistance(the mycelium), you would have two. Plus, the organism may actually encourage and/or help the mushroom mycelium by perhaps helping to break down the substrate into raw nutrients or other substances that the mycelium can use, or maybe even ridding the substrate of the mycelium's waste, who knows.

Anyway, I've seen a number of references as to why pasturization of straw for bulk cultivation is perfectly fine and actually desirable, as opposed to sterilization, because the beneficial organisms that remain help fight off contamination.

So, my question is.. Does anybody know what organisms are beneficial to mycelium growth? Has anybody tried isolating them and using them with say, cakes, or grains, maybe inoculating casing material?

I think it would be fascinating, and one step closer to natural conditions.

I haven't heard of any organisms, but someone on here made a casing mixture with kitty litter and he said it did a great job of keeping contams out.

Yeah, I bet it did a good job clumping up and not giving moisture to shrooms too. I'd love to see some yeilds off of a casing made with kitty litter

I wish I could remember who it was, but I'm pretty sure he said it went well.

Where are you kitty litter casing man?

How sure are you of this? Kitty litter is used as a desiccant. It would be like using Dri Rite for your casing...

Sorry man, I don't see it working.

i agree totally. I cannot see it working in any way. BTW my new casings of 50/50 peat/silicia gel have been giving me excellent yields!

Well hell, you wouldn't even need to mist it then, it'd pull the moisture right out of the air, if it's a desiccant like they say it is. Maybe. And I'm sure it's not so strong a desiccant that it would keep the shrooms from pulling water out of it.

I'm not saying it's advisable and I wouldn't try it myself, but after seeing some of the shit I've seen on here I wouldn't write anything off. These things will grow off a friggin' bible, for Christ's sake!

Yo,
If you are talking about a symbiotic relationship between a myc. and another animal, that is an excellent question and would be very interesting to learn more on. Unless thier is more lit. on the subgect than good luck. First place I would check out would be a university lib.

Well maybe their is not a specific symibiotic relationship with myc. due to the fact we can grow them with out another animal present.

What does this mean synergistically?

Your thread was hijacked because there is not organisms that you can add to any substrate that will work with mycelium. If you want that benifit of lack of contams you need to work with substrates where the organisims already exist, straw and poo. Pasturize it and there is little chance of contams.
