Fruiting Chamber
    #3280563 - 10/26/04 07:08 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

My friends cakes are going to be birthed in a day or 2 and he was wondering how tall the growing chamber needs to be for normal pf cakes that are 300 ml instead of 1/2 pint. What would you recommend him to use for a fruiting chamber since he was just going to use a a plastic tub but hes not sure which size. He would also use perlite to humidify it and fan a couple times a day.

I'd say just get a container double the height of the cakes. Even if they press against the lid, they should be fine.

Any of the larger ones are plenty tall enough.. you really aren't going to find one that is too small if you're being practical when you browse.

Something like 18 gallons should be plenty.

I ended up getting a 15 gallon tub, but the lib fits kinda loosely, is this OK? I heard that perlite sometimes makes the humidity too high so would that be a good thing? Also since the lid isn't clear i was thinking about cutting a hole in the lid and putting a piece of glass in it. Has any done this and would i use the silicone cocking stuff they put in showers or something?

The lids never fit perfectly on the tubs.

I'd use plexiglass, it is lighter than glass.. might be cheaper too. You wouldn't want to have the glass come loose and land on your babies!

Thanks for the answers. I am just gonna use the glass, because 99 cents isn't quite in my budget and i already have a piece. I didn't think about it fallling but i guess if i make the hole smaller then the glass it can't fall through.

be careful cutting the hole. The lid can crack. And never cut towards any body parts. I've got a big scar from cutting block of candle wax.

Yeah, laying it ontop of a smaller hole sounds like a good idea.

Very nice looking chambers Sam I like that much better than glass or plexiglas for that matter although I'm still partial to these (1 or 2)

1/4" plexi
