I just started finding my own manure Lucky for me the lady has the ranch hands pile it up on the back forty so It is old when I go to get it. My question is how do I go about preparing it for use as a substrate

don't sterilize--that will leave it much more open to contams than pasteurizing. you can either wrap it in a nylon laundry bag, or cloth, and simmer it between 140 and 180 (160 is good) degrees F for about an hour. let drain. or you can cook it at the same temps in the oven for the same time. should be moist, not dripping wet.
add pasteurized straw if you like. should work well on its own as well.
good luck. let us know how it turns out.

"Boiliing" is O.K., but baking @ 200 is MY prefed method--when "Boiling" you leech too many nutrients.

I dried mine outside on some netting that was hanging, then put them in the oven at 175 for 2 hours, then soaked in water, drained, squeezed and spawned.
The hardest part I had was soaking it in water AFTER pastuerizing, it was a pain in the ass to keep it sterile. I heard on the old Drool donkey that karl brooks added 1 part water to 5 parts dung and baked at 175 for 2 hours and it worked fine for him.

Good point Dioze. So if you do boil/pastuerize, use the leftover water in your garden or on house plants.
