Wildlife winner - Danny's delicate picture of porcelain mushrooms
A photograph taken by Shrewsbury man Danny Beath has been highly commended in one of the world's most prestigious photographic competitions.
Mr Beath's Porcelain Mushrooms beat thousands of entries to scoop the accolade at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, organised by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine.
Mr Beath, who lives at Gains Park, saw the translucent porcelain mushrooms sprouting from the dead branch of a beech on Nesscliffe Hill.
"The following week I returned to the tree on a stormy afternoon and waited for a couple of hours until the clouds broke briefly. The sun flashed across the sky and I managed to take three shots before the light went dull again and it began to rain. The tree blew down a short time later."
Louise Grove-White, competition manager, said that Mr Beath's sunlit image of mushrooms growing on a beech tree was among more than 18,500 entries from over 50 countries.
The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, which displays all 90 winning and commended images, is open to visitors in the Natural History Museum's Jerwood Gallery, from October 30 to April 17.
Hmm...its a nice pic and all, but I'm surprised thats 'the one' from 18,500 entries. On what criteria do they judge them I wonder? In that one I can kind of see a yin-yang balance going on with the black and the white of the two tree trunks, and the mushrooms are in between the black and the white in a gap of empty air...or something...guess its kinda groovy.
no shit, ive seen anno, and plenty others take pics of some mushrooms that are 100x better than that one.
