Looking for Casing Advice

Currently there are 36 jars of innooculated B+, and 12 jars PR. They seem to enjoy the warm temperature of the office, which seldemly drops under 75 due to the many computers running. I make sure to shut the door and it's like an sauna within a few hours (ok ~83f but it feels like a sauna). The jars seem to be enjoying the heat though, with about 25-30% growth here after 1wk. No signs of any contams visually. I am curious about casings however. I've had decent luck with 50/50 peat moss/vermiculite for casings. Any suggestions? I will post a pic tomorrow of the old casing, but a lot of the fruit stems didn't seem as thick as I was hoping for. I'll be casing in the next 14 days or so and was hoping my fellow shroomery members could assist with some casing tips. Curious too how much slower the PR mycel. is growing compared to the B+. The B+ is probably 5-10x growth after 1 week. Some pics: (what i'm currently working on...) ----------------------------------------------------------- Some pics: (from a previous grow...) -----------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for all the great feedback. Maybe I can top this last casing: (12" plate with quite a mound of fresh shroom) I did notice the sides of the casings pulling inwards away from the edges, and some of the stems seemed small. Is this an indication of not enough water? Any recommendations?

My guess would be yes, not enough water. Don't take my word for it though i'm pretty new to the hobby. What I can say for sure is you have some nice looking shrooms. Excellent work.

is it ok to have a 1:1 ratio of casing substrate (for example, 1 inch of substrate 1 inch of casing)

isn't 1" casing a bit excessive?

Most definitely, that would just use up valuable energy, time and space. IMO

1:1 (1" cas/1" sub) seems ok, but it may take a little longer to colonize the casing layer. I used .5" casing layer/~1" substrate/.5" casing layer "sandwich" and one flush produced ~200g fresh in the first flush. Here's some pics of that last casing: (Man did these caps really turn DARK, i mean, the entire casing was totally covered in purple spores after one night unattended. Even the perlite below had a bunch of purple on it) (Notice the casing pulling away on the last pic?)

Actually me and 9 other friends split them up one night, about 3.5g each, plus plenty left over for a little extra later in the evening. Talk about one religious experience! Everyone had an incredible time, except one friend. She had a bit of a bad reaction to it i guess. But we took good care of her. The rest of us were flying. I remember she kept saying "Wow, it was really always like this?" (implying our group of friends etc).

Few things.
Those shrooms are pretty skinny. Might want to check your air exchange.
As for the casings shrinking. They do this because they are using up the moisture to produce the fruits. It's totally normal. Dont worry about it =). Just keep your humidity up and you'll have nice thick fruits.
You could try verm/coir. I dont like peat just because you need to do extra work for the pH buffer. Verm/Coir dont need to be buffered.
A 25% ratio is more then enough. 1/4" casing per 1" substrate. Do not exceed 50%. This can lead to contams because of the ammount of moisture built up, and longer colonization times. Also would be very hard to achieve an even pinset.
If you are looking to really increase your yields, you should try whole grains, such as Rye or Popcorn(Stay away from WBS for casing, they dont hold enough water[Hence the "res tek"]).

Yes, that's exactly it, thin fruits!
Can you please explain more about the air exchange/humidity? I was basically using those plain plastic storage bins, with perlite and spraying the sides of the bin each day.
I'd like to perhaps experiment someday with some whole grains, but i'd like to keep this "just large enough/simple enough" for the time being. Any recommendations for a good casing tek.?

For air exchange, you cannot go any better then a Vicks Cool Mist. Here is mine with a custom HEPA filter.
You can get them at local drug stores. Such as Rite-Aid and such.
For humidity, you cannot go no better then an Ultrasonic. Used on a timer of course. I run mine every 2 hours for 20 minutes.
For casing, pretty simple. 1/2" bottom layer, 1" sub layer, 1/4" casing layer. 30/70 verm/coir works great.
You can get more info on my setup and other junk here.

Oh yea, if you are looking for a much smaller setup. The #1 thing is a Poormans Pod.

Thanks for all the great info! I like the look of the Poorman's Pod. Wondering if I can use perlite instead of geo-lite or hydroton? The fish tank humidifier seems like a great idea.

Yes you can use Perilite. Go with the pump, forget the fish tank heater to create humditiy.

Citric.. you said stay away from WBS for casing.. and then post a pic of a WBS casing? :P
I've always heard good things about WBS and casing.. What else would you do with the WBS, besides spawn straw or something?
That's what I'm going to use it for... should I expect less than optimal outcome?

WBS is great for spawning. Yes I used WBS because I was unable to get Rye. I had extra WBS laying around so I made the casings. Basically I just did a trial run with my new Martha setup to get it all tweaked out.
So now it is all ready for Rye =)
