Not pinning, only expanding.

My friend has a Casing that just wont pin. The Myc. took over alot of the top of the casing unevenly so he patched it and now it basically just takes over that layer too.
The temps were dropped slightly (couldnt be dropped much)
He started faning and giving it light.
This doesnt seem to be doing much?

how long has it been since the pinning strategy has been started? How much light is he giving, and how often a day is fanning being done?

just give it some time. Patience grasshopper. =) No, seriously, just from what you have said it sounds like they just need time. it can take up to two weeks before they pin. Try and see if its knotting at all. If it is, pins are on the way in a few days. =)

Well he says he started this pinning startegy About 2 days ago, so I should tell him to hold his horses (making me post on here liek that!)
and I suppose even if the surface was colonized it should be fine and still pin?

the surface is supposed to colonize before it pins. try looking around the last couple pages on here. There is some pictures of some casings right before they pin. Definetly tell him to hold his horses, call him an impatient kiddie If all is done well it can be accomplished fast but it may take up to 15 days depending on strain and conditions. My casings just started knotting, they've been in the fruiting chamber for 4 days, no pins yet but sooon. soon.

Two days? Chill man! It should look like this after a week:
But it takes often 8-14 days to start looking like this:
Patience, it will come.

Sounds like he initiated pinning late too me possibly. But still he should expect to see slowed myc growth once fruiting/pinning has been initiated it also takes several days for the myc to switch from vegetative growth to generative growth once this occurs you will begin seeing knotting and within a few days of that you will see primordia starting to form everywhere if you have a good pinning strategy to follow which is basically 12-16hrs. of light, 4-6 fresh air exchanges (FAE) a day and a cold shock would hurt it either 12-24hrs. this will slow that vegetative growth AND help trigger pinning. Hey Scat, in your second pic...what are those tiny tiny white dots (they kinda look like what would come off of styrofoam if you scratched, you know?), Im getting those in my casing also. Is that from the Jiffy mix?

Those are your babies! Thats primordia. Alot of them will stretch up and start coloring in, the caps dark and the stems golden which you can also see in the second pic. The little primordia (nerds!) you see left not turned into pins is part of the second flush forming its start. One to two days you should see them turning into pins and start growing!

That is an excellent pic of primordia discman!
All of them wont turn into pins on the first flush, some are formed for the second and I think even third flushes. Some may never pin. Alot of them will though. Lots of primordia means you will get lots of pins!

True. I got about 5 pins that I can see on each of my 3 casings. I post a pic for you guys to see in the next couple of days.
P.S. Do Treasure Coasts pin pretty evenly?

I think "won't" is a very strong word, my friend.

Usually on casings they don't. Perhaps others have experienced differnt but I've always found that both the first and second flush primordia come in with the first pinset.

yeah. I agree. my casings don't pin everywhere either. After I picked the first flush, there were still plenty of white dots left. Hell, there's still a lot of dots left between mushies.

I believe most all your flushes are set initially. But due to the damage of havesting the myc has puts out even more pinning sites over time. I've watched casings and have seen at least three flushes maybe more come from my initial pinset. It is hard sometimes to keep track especially when patching exposed areas after harvesting the monsters. This is why it's just foolish to recase casing, I can't believe all the people that trashed their casings because they simply didn't know better. I know a guy that scraped all his casings and threw that material outside and he got a hell of a flush of stunted little ones, lack of nutes I suppose? He wanted to make it a tek until we talked him out of it (nothing to brag about ) GL
