blue stems and caps....higher potentcy?...myth or reality?
    #2238714 - 01/13/04 09:11 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

i've been hearing a lot that mushrooms are more potent if they have either blue caps or blue stems. but after reading a lot in the contamination posts it seems to be just bruising on the mushrooms due to poor handling. is it true that the mushrooms are more potent if they turn blue or do certain strains turn blue due to different reasons? i'm unsure of the strain. ihope i provided everyone with enough info.

when a psilocybe bruises blue it is because the psilocin in that particular area has oxidized and thus becomes inactive. If an active mushroom is really blue it can mean one of two things. The mushroom either has alot of psilocin present in it and it is a very potent species or the mushroom has been handled quite a bit or was dried in very poor conditions and has lost a lot of potency. I think that generally if the mushroom is fresh and rapidly bruises blue in a matter of seconds from bruising that it is a potent mushroom but if the bluing progressively intensifies over a couple days in the drying process then the mushroom has lost a bit of potency. Somebody please correct me if I am wrong.

ps why is this in the contamination forum?
