metho vs iso

does anyone know what the difference is between methylated spirits and isopropyl alcohol when used for sterilizing equipment?

does methylated spirits leave a residue or something? the iso seems to evaporate very quickly but i have never tried metho.

Methanol is a smaller molecule than isopropanol and evaporates faster. It's a more suitable solvent for alkaloid extractions, but make sure you get pure stuff, and only let it evaporate in a well ventilated area, preferably outside, as high levels can dissolve your optic nerves. Not good:crazy:

maybe i should elaborate a little...

in the US methylated spirits would probably be known as denatured alcohol? am i correct?

i believe this is different to methanol...

Methylated spirits is pricipally ethanol, with a hint of methanol to make it undrinkable, but depending on the brand it can contain any number of other aldulterants eg dyes, bittering agents. Denatured alcohol is just ethanol & methanol. At least where I come from.

yeh that would be it cdc!
but do these trace adulterants leave a residue?
i assume isopropyl alcohol leaves nothing behind when it evaporates because it is sold as disinfectant for cuts and wounds where as denatured ethanol is not :)

Meths' is unsuitable as its Methanol (usually only at 10%) and water and is not designed for steralization.

Use Isopropyl alcohol at a 90%+ concentration to steralize things. Meth's is really designed to be a paint stripper, Isopropyl is for steralization.
