shredded newspaper as straw replacement?
    #3275257 - 10/25/04 02:45 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

anyone know if this might work? poo alone is very nutritious so i think that mixing some non-nutritious fluff in the form of newspaper would do a service to the myc and their speedy colonization of the poo. does anybody think this will work well? is straw absolutely necessary to mix w/ poo in a bulk grow?

I have read of a cellulose type of insulation which is made from
paper and cardboard being mixed with poo and some nutrient additives
(ie cerial grain flour) but Im not sure what the results were
I suppose it could work, as long as you could get the moisture content right

I have seen a composted poo and vermiculite mix work but not as well as straw

its the availability of straw that holds me back. cardboard and verm doesn't sound bad b/c cardboard is structurally more strong and also more porous than straw.

leached horse or cow manure as a substate is mentioned by Stamets
in The Mushroom Cultivator
Why not, natural habitat is dung or soil enriched with manure
I would try manure mixed with verm.....should work

They say horse poo doesn't need it because of what they eat. Cow should work without too. Trying a little couldn't hurt. I would use cardboard over paper instead too.

Just thought I'd add that right now is the best time to find straw. Garden places, craft stores, costume shops...they all have it for Halloween.

Its often at craft stores and they carry a substitue that will work at PetCo and probably other pet stores. I believe Prisoner has used it before. "_____ Hay"

Or if you live in BFE like me you can stop at a farm and pick it up for usually $1 a bail.

don't live in a farmy area. i just did see some erosion control net that looked like it was thatched w/ straw (golden colored and strawlike). i think i'll bring some scissors w/ me later and do a little snip snip of the bottom part.
