Mixing Strains & Casing
    #3274407 - 10/25/04 07:31 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I had a few questions going into my first batch of shrooms. I want to start with six 1/2 pint jars of Mexi-cub and six 1/2 pint jars of PESA. I think I want to case six of the jars and leave six as cakes to improve my chance of getting mushrooms in the end.

From reading the material on this website, it seems that I would follow the PF Tek until I got pining and then I would case...is this correct?

Is it a waste to cake and case since casing gets significantly better yield?

What do I do with the cased shrooms once they start pushing through the casing?

Is it a good or bad idea to mix the two strains when casing and/or fruiting?

Do either of these strains need to be cold-shocked?

Thanks so much and best harvests to you all :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

It can be but you'd want to make about 2 casings with 6 cakes. If one becomes contamed..you lose 3 cakes. If a cake gets contamed you don't look 3 of the 6, only 1 of 6, much better. However if everything is done with cleanliness you should have no problems with casings contaming either..

Watch them grow.?.

How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber
Casing layer colonization and overlay

No, what you should do is keep your jars until 100% colonization and then dunk your 3 cakes for the casing and then case them.  Place them in your fruiting chamber and await their fruiting.

Depending on how well the cake is taken care of, it can produce as much / more as a cased cake.  Remember your casings have 3 cakes in them probably, so your yield should be divided by 3 to compare to a cake.

Put some casing mix over top of the places they are pushing through until it's pushing through equally all over your casing.  An even pinset = key

From everything I've heard it should be fine.  Even if you are casing multiple strains, chances are they will just grow two different kinds of mushrooms.  If you are talking fruiting two different strains in the same fruiting chamber, then no, no problems will arise.  They have typically the same incubation and fruiting temperature / humidity requirements.

The only problem is casings like a little less humidity than cakes, but shouldn't cause any REAL REAL serious problems.

Cold shock all your cakes at the same time you dunk them, unless you are using them for a casing.  If you want to cold shock your casing you will want to dunk your cakes, make your casing, allow the substrate to colonize the casing a bit and then cold shock.

Since there is still need for colonization with your casing you do not want to initiate pinning immediately like you do with a cake.

Thanks Silven - that post helped me a lot. Growing mushrooms seems like a lot of fun and it sure helps that people around here are so helpful

So since this is my first grow, would you recommend either casing or cakes...or should I just try out both? I was also wondering if anyone has any firsthand info about the Mexi-cub or PESA strain.

Thanks again!

I love casings over cakes. Some love cakes over casings. I feel I get a better yeild out of casings but who knows..Maybe case 9 of them and keep 3 as cakes? It seems most newbies who do cakes then casings say they'll never go back. Personal preference though.

This advice isn't exactly right. You shouldn't patch over pins. Once mycelium comes through the casing surface you SHOULD patch because even pinset IS key, however this should be done when a few areas of myc are popping up, long before shrooms do, and if they do you shouldnt cover them.

I agree with Prisoner as well..I have heard of mixing two cubies together working but I have not heard of any good results from it and everything I know about shrooms tells me this is a way to make your yeild decrease. They can both be fruited in the same chamber in seperate casings though.
