Dont keep your growin from anybody in your house, you never know what could happen. Problems with the law, or just keeping secrets from your significant other could possibly arise problems. Just letting you know. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

There is also rope lights out which are christmas lights in a clear tuble.  They work very well also.  I picked them up from kmart last year for $2 a strand.  Strands are 15 feet.  These lights were marked $8 but when i bought 1 strand it rang up as 2, I quickly walked back to where i found them and bought all that were in stock.

Be careful with normal sized lights, they can get pretty hot.. I wouldn't be surprised if they could melt tubs.

But if you're talking about the mini ones, I'm sure they're fine. Cool idea, actually. You could line them around the top of your pod and make it all bling bling  lol

Heat would be bad for the shroomies. In a fruiting chamber, it should be sealed pretty well to keep in humidity..the heat will build up like woah. Theres someone on here who uses christmas lights to heat his incubator. I believe it only took like 7 bulbs to get the cooler to 85 degrees.

I believe the normal ones. I still think they would generate alot of heat. Maybe not though, you would only need a few..maybe 4-8 up top and same on bottom level. You would really be better off using LED's but you might not know how to wire those up or have any lying around the house. But maybe you do so I thought I'd mention it. Compact flouros work good too but in your situation I don't think the would. Small 15 watt night lights work well too.

Good luck and get temp readings at 3-5 inches from the casing surface (or where it would be) because this is about where the tops of the shrooms would be which is the closest to the light (and heat)

I've posted this a lot lately.. lol..

I found that light at Wal-Mart for 5$. The spectrum is what caught my eye.

I was using it for both heat and a light source for the first week or so, and it seemed to be working great, other than the fact that it had to be on 24/7 to maintain the temps. Then it suddenly started getting colder here, and it was no longer working... with temps hovering around 68?F.. too cold. I've found that it only raises the temp by 5?F when on 24/7, and only 2-3?F when on for 12 hours a day.

Anyway, I solved the problem by getting a 55W heating pad, bought at a thrift store for 3$.

It keeps temps in the tub at about 73 - 75?F.. more towards 73, even on high.. it has gotten quite cold here in the last few days. I'm going to move to a tub in tub setup ASAP, because it really is the best.. but this is working for now.

I really like the LED idea. It'd love to line the top inside rim of the tub with them, that would be awesome.

You could buy 360, 440 and 460nm LEDs and alternate them around the tub.

or you could just buy a few white light LED's which contain the whole spectrum. LED's are super bright. I've never seen LED's measured in those specific wavelengths(meaning you cant get a blue that is 420, 425 and a blue that is 440), You'd have to pick the closest colors that match the spectrum, ie.. 440/60 is bluish teal and 360 isn't even in the visable spectrum.

according to superbrightleds.com (which is an excellent source of quality LEDs, cheap) the lowest blue you can get(from them) is 463nm and the next lowest would be a UV of 405nm. So you'd be cutting yourself short trying to use this to your advantage when really pinning doesn't require that great of an intensity of light. The intensity provided from white light provides the necessary wavelengths as well as other unnecessary light. So instead of wasting money and time to wire/solder up 4 LED's of each specific wavelength you could just use 4 white LED's and get the same effect.

Get the "Super Bright Blue LED's" They are in the correct spectrum and will work fine. Don't alternate LED's with different peaks, just put in 1-4 of those^

White will work as well but blue works the same. You only really need one per about 2 casings (or 6 cakes). Definatly could put more under one light but..four is a better number though.

im really likin the idea of LEDs. if im only good do 4 1/2 pint BRF cakes in a 20 qt container, would 2 "super bright blue LEDs" be adequate? also which of the blue LEDs do i need? what are the proper nm, mcd, and degree figures? how can one determine this? where can i read about LEDs and how to rig up an LED fixture?

They certainly would..I just told you which ones any that say QUOTE "SUPER BRIGHT BLUE LEDS" Those will work fine. I believe however IIRC, the best range of light is 460-480nm. I researched it before so a friend of mine could get them and this was the solution..all the ones that were super bright blue were good in this spectrum. You'd only need 1 or 2. There are people on the board who could help you with this. I just did the research for my friend to see if they'd work..he's the circuitry guy. I could ask him but you'll probably get a quicker answer from Sam on here or others..post with a title something about "hooking up LED's" and you should get a good response

What did I miss?

Oh, LEDs, huh...  do you want to have fun building or do you want to get the job done?

if first, PM me.  You'll need to go shopping at an electronic store first.
If prefer not to make your own... here's some ideas..
Antec Mini Blue External LED Light Tube
Blue Cold Cathode Tube Light
MGE Dual 12" Cold Cathode Tubes - Blue
MGE EL Wire Cable - Blue
MGE Laser LED - Blue
Vastech 6" Ultra Bright Blue LED CCFL Kit with Dual Output Inverter

I used to jump into making stuff, because I enjoy it and feel of customization.  But for $4-8 bucks for a pack of LEDs, it might be better for some to just take the premade ones.  Also, if you get any of those computer part up there, you'll need a 12vDC adapter.  Or if you have a computer parts sitting around, old AT, not ATX, style power supply.  As far as wiring, just post another post about it.  I'll give you detailed info.

If latter, stick with regular lights.  It's safer to put it on a timer.  I think you can get one of those accent lights at walmart that's very low profile, 20W bulb, I think.  Or you can get a pocket sized slim flourescent ones, oh.. about 4"x3"x1.5" from wally for 15 bucks(I'm really not sure about the price for this).

Anyways, I'll wait for a PM, I guess.  Good luck

Sam
