Smoke on the horizon? Help sterilize?
    #3273982 - 10/25/04 01:23 AM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, I love to smoke my cigars, love the damn things! What I'm wondering is does smoke cause contams? Because a few times a was puffing away while innoculating a few jars, was this a bad idea? I didnt think it would do anything but now I think it may have jeapordized my jars. Does it do anything or am I just being to cautious, hey maybe it could help with sterilizing??

I see two problems with this, but they don't seem that serious:
A) Longer time innoculating,
B) Germ transfer from mouth to cigar to hand

Not a huge concern, but the smoke wouldn't cause contaminates.

i'd say put the cigar down for the 5 minutes it takes to inoculate. Smoke is not an organism and cannot cause contamination. Contamination can occur from what zeroarmy said.

True, but the whole time I inoculated I never touched the cigar(was in mouth whole time). If smoke doesnt cause contams could it possibly help kill contams?

I don't think it'll kill contaims because sufficient O2 is still present in quantities large enough for aerobic bacteria meanwhile a lot of bacteria are anaerobic. I cannot see smoke as being beneficial to a sterile process in any way.
