Anyone ever heard about the Chapman Stick or Warr Guitars? Im thinking of buying a Stick, too bad Warr Guitars are $4k. Some artists worth checking out are: www.beholdthearctopus.com (warr guitar player) and www.greghoward.com (stick player).

The dude in "Liquid Tension Experiment" (Tony Levin) playes a chapman stick.... I dunno~ anything about them, but they look pretty cool.... Being used to a guitar, I dunno~ how that wide neck would work.... I don't think you would be able to do any clean bar chording on that thing....! I know I know, it's a bass instrument.... (Right?)

nah, you use both your hands to tap, usually people use their left hand to tap bass strings and the right to tap high treble strings. yeah, LTE rocks, i have a few hours of them playing live on a vhs, it was well worth the 20 dollars
check out the example video files of the chapman stick here

Holy BAT CRAP...!!! I never knew it was like that...! I just thought it was another bass instrument with a shitload of strings...!!! The end of the second Greg Howard vid he had distortion on the "melody" strings, and clean sound on the bass strings...! If you could get your feet to hold drum sticks, you would be a one man band..!!!!
On a side note, I wonder if they got the idea of this instrument based on how Stanley Jordan playes his guitar...? He is a very good jazz player that plays a two handed chording and soloing technique, almost like shown for the Chapman.... Any musician would appreciate watching him play, even if you don't care for jazz - I have 2 of his DVDs.... Absolutely amazing musicianship/showmanship...!
I am glad I wandered into this forum and found this post...! I really had no idea what potential the Chapman had....! And the vids are cool as hell, I wanna~ see more...! Greg said in the vid that it was easy to learn.... I am thinking that if you wanna~ be "good" it would take lots and lots of practice on that thing - even with my 12yrs. guitar experience.... It is NEVER as easy as a professional makes it look, and that Greg Howard guy was definately a pro....! Some of his demo riffs were beautiful....
All that being said, guitars look "cooler" on stage....

I have a big decision coming up shortly. I can buy a used 10 string with all the bells and whistles for about 1200 or I can just sit on my money until I save up enough for a half way decent used Jap car. I really dont want to turn down this offer, but, if the car I have now shits the bed a week after I buy the stick, I might be stuck for a while.

^^^ best basses ever. i got to watch Michael Manring play a few of his Warr basses in a friends' livingroom. he is superhuman with the tap and hold method, and he proves that short guys can play bass. somewhere on www.loopersdelight.com there is a guy who uses a stick w/ an echoplex, it's amazing...

I want to try to get them a gig up in massachusetts, but it will be hard to find other bands that fit their style. Im not going to slot them in with hardcore bands or shmetal bands.

This is a glorious day! I bought it! My first Chapman stick is in my hands right now; its time to jump back into the music world after abstaining from it for 9 months. Just call me a human creation station from now on. oh man........... the possibilities....
