Need ID! Large orange mushrooms, Texas rains
    #3272063 - 10/24/04 03:56 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I'm certain they aren't active, but I'm real curious since they are ENORMOUS and popped up out of the ground near my front door overnight! Cool-looking things, they are.

Anyway, they are a very uniform ruddy orange colour, the gills a slightly paler version of this colour, completely attached to the stem, no evidence of a veil. The cap in the younger specimens (smaller ones) has a nice rounded edge, but in the larger/older specimens it has a wavy edge. No really distinguishing marks on the cap, the gills, or the stem, the latter of which is the same dull orange color of the rest of the mushroom. They are growing in large clusters around/on tree roots and up against fences in my yard. They grow very fast and are quite large, some of the caps are larger than my hand.

Anyway, if this sounds familiar to anyone or someone wants to wager a guess, that would be awesome! I've never seen this particular mushroom before and it's cool as hell.

take shots of the gills and stipe please.
Also, habitat shots would help...

they might be a Gymnopilus species.
they might also be an Omphalotus species (which are toxic).
