How do you know when to induce pinning on a casing. My friend has lots of think mycelium spots on his casing popping up all over in it but it seems to just keep spreading.
When, or how do you induce pinning?

It sounds like your ready to start fruiting conditions. There are varying opinions on the subject of when to induce pinning, some like to patch case then induce fruiting conditions, some like to wait until there is even casings colonization. What you want is the mycelium to be evenly colonized as possible, that way you can achieve an even pinset, maximizing the potential of the first flush. I beleive 30% surface colonization is a widley accepted figure. Anyway, to induce fruiting, 3 environmental changes must take place, they are: 1. air temperature drop to 74 - 78 F 2. removal of C02 to less than 5000 ppm 3. "Diffuse of natural or exposure to 12-16 hours/day of grow-lux type fluorescent light high in blue specta at the 480 nm wavelenth" TMC The easiest way to do this is to get a large tote which can hold your casing(s). Put a layer of perlite on the bottom and add an inch or so of water with H202. Expose to light. Maintain a temperature 74 - 78 F. Remove CO2 by fanning 3 times a day, just enough to remove the C02 which sinks to the bottom. Once again there are variations on the way people fruit their casings. Check out the information on the shroomery and find one that best suits your needs. If you make the environmental changes I outlined here you should see pins in about 6-10 days. When the cropping period begins and primordia formation is over, the relative humidity should be lowered to 85-92%, maintaining correct temperature, light exposure and CO2 removal. You said the mycrlium just keeps spreading. You may have overlay, which is when the mycelium forms a "mat" over the casing layer. Here's a link about overlay; http://shroomery.org/index/par/23449 There's a wealth of information on the shroomery reguarding fruiting conditions/methods. I suggest you go through the tek's and faq's. I hope this helped. good luck
