hardware space? You mean hard drive space? I might suggesting deleting some stuff, removing some startup programs(type "msconfig" in the run window), going into your add/remove programs and removing anything you don't use anymore.
You could also install more ram, defrag your hard drive, run spyware removal tools like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy. Formatting the computer would also work really well..

Try running ad-aware to remove any spyware. That usually speeds things up, and also run a virus scanner like AVG , just to be on the safe side. Both programs are free for personal use.

Also, go to microsoft.com and look for windows update, there should be many updates for windows me, as it was the worst version of windows microsoft released. The updates might fix the biggest bugs from the operating system.

If your running out of space you could always slap a second hard drive in their, i have a few in mine. Supposedly windows me isn't so stable, perhaps XP Pro might be an option. Also black viper has some decent tweaks on his site h??p://www.blackviper.com/WinME/supertweaks.htm

Spybot search and destroy is also good at removing spyware from your box.

You really must change your OS. Windows ME is terrible. It will always give you crap. Besides that, you will need to get someone who knows how to reformat your hard drive. When the computer gets that slowe, chances are it is full of spyware and more than likely a few viruses. This really isn't your fault. Any computer connected to the internet WILL get viruses regardless of your anti-virus program or firewall. Having a very aggressive firewall will only delay the inevitable. Programs like IRC and others that utilize other protocols only exacerbate this problem. For a real performance boost, this probably will be your best option. Without changing your OS and reformatting, you will only be putting off what must be done. Call Microsoft and they will tell you the exact same thing.
