get a 12 volt adapter from some appliance or buy one at radio shack. cut the wires then tape and or solder them together

Sam, 12 volts will not shock you.

Unless you stick your tongue on the bare wires.

Even then, it's iffy.... Voltage is like electrical pressure. There just isn't enough to push through the(usually) pretty thick skin on your hands. There is quite a bit of resistance there.

I guess it depends on your definition of "nice jolt". I just don't want him to be afraid he's going to get zapped by a 12V power supply.. lol. I consider a "nice jolt" to be the 20,000Volt zap from my Chevy's ignition coil.. I have never been shocked by a 12V source, and I've done a lot of tinkering. There is really nothing to worry about.

He does need to worry about the 120V mains, though. Don't go opening up the power supply and poking around.

I knew you were going to mention a car battery. :wink:It's a common misunderstanding. It's not about believing you man, it's basic electronic theory.

You can dip your hands in salt water and grab the terminals on your 12V car battery and you will be lucky to feel a slight tingle. It certainly will not kill you, even though the battery is capable of outputting hundreds of amps. Like I said before, 12 volts is not enough "electrical pressure" to penetrate the resistance of the skin on your hands.

You're correct in that it is the amperes that kills you, that's why the shock from a 20,000+ volt ignition coil isn't lethal. But you're misunderstanding the voltage aspect of it.

Remember, Amps = Voltage / Resistance. The resistance of your skin is high; 12 volts is not enough to pass enough current(amps) for you to feel it.

It's as simple as that. Nobody ever has or ever will be killed by 12 volts.

I hate to argue, I certainly like this board's friendly nature... I just like to think of it as informing. I didn't want the dude to think that he needs to actually be afraid of the output on a computer power supply.

You're right in that exercising caution while working with electricity is always a good thing, though.

so could you just use a old nes power source then i think that was 12v
any old(or new) 12v dc power converter would work.
you could find a cheap one quick at a pawn shop
$.02
:tongue2:

If you're going to go the wall-wart route, which is admittedly less bulky than a computer power supply, make sure it is a little above the rated current of the fan(s).

IE: If your fan draws 0.3A(300mA), that 500mA adapter would be fine. But if you're going to run two fans, it would be inadequate and would cease to work before it normally would.

BTW, Goodwill and the like are excellent places to find very cheap power adapters. They usually have a whole bin full of them. Just go through them and find a 12V @ 1A supply, and it will be enough to run all the computer fans you could throw at it.

Serious, it is less to voltage you have to worry about and more the amperage so I here. Not to get to technical, but 120v at the nominal 16 amps I believe it is wouldn't kill you, but 120v at 100 amps I believe can kill you.
