Kansas Cubes (Pics) UPDATE 12.04.04
    #3269646 - 10/23/04 10:47 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

WILD Cubes found in NE Kansas horse
dung pile and in the middle of a
trail. (approx 2 lbs wet)

Walking up the trail, I first encountered
this incredibly meaty group. The stipe of
the largest was saved and caps discarded.
All of the caps (except for 2 small ones)
from this group were over mature and buggy.
The stems proved to be okay. (take note of
the large stumpy stem in the last harvest
pic).

Walking up to the dung pile, I spied caps
peeking out from under some dry grasses.

Moving the grasses to the side, the sunset revealed
a most beautiful sight!

And this is the harvest cleaned up.

This is the third flush I have harvested from this
particular patch. Finding cubes in Kansas is like
finding a needle in a haystack!

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad

This has to be one of the best
finds I have ever had in one spot!
I have hunted in Florida for years,
and coming up with this type of
harvest would have taken me over
an hour of hunting. This particular
haul took all of 15 minutes

What boggles my mind is the fact that
these cubes were found growing wild
in KANSAS! I think it has something to
do with the horses originating from
gulf coast states or being shown in
gulf coast states.

I will post some other pics tomorrow.

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad

Check out the stump of
a stem on the right side
of the harvest pic (in front of
one of the largest caps).
It was amazingly beefy!
The stems of the rest of the
haul are mostly solid. This
should translate to a higher
dry weight.

Went to check on the Kansas cubes and
found the new patch to be fruiting again.
I took one pic and the batteries ran
out (forgot to bring fresh ones).

Nomadette found her first cube today. The veil
had just broken and is a monster!

Unseasonably warm temps have not only kept
the original patch flushing (5x now), but
three new patches were located, fruiting with
large, meaty fruits (unforunately, half were
too buggy to keep the caps).

The beautiful aspect of this strain is how robust and meaty
the fruits are. The pins were almost as big as a lighter.
The stems are practically solid... more solid than hollow.

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad & Nomadette

I agree with psily. They do look different from a lot of the cubes reported from the gulf coast. More patches on the cap and more reddish-brown. The first ones are incredibly meaty! They look a lot like agaricus! Beautiful finds!

Giant cubes, on horseshit, in Kansas, at the end of October.

Thank you to everyone for the kind words.
I (and Nomadette) feel blessed with this
find. Cubes on horse manure is not very
common in the first place. Cubes in N Kansas,
at the end of October, after temps had dropped
in the 30's (for a couple of eves) are just
short of a miraculous find.

We are not able to frequently visit the dung
pile (which is disturbed on an ongoing basis)
and have to harvest what we can when we can.
If the fruits are left to mature for too long,
they get too buggy to harvest anything but the
stem. Many of the buttons are being attacked by
bugs before they even reach maturity.

We went out today (pics to be posted by myself
and Nomadette later this eve) and found the
"road" patch to be fruiting, the patch Nomadette
found the lone monster was covered by new dung,
and I discovered a newly fruiting patch, bringing
the total find of seperate patches to six. The
original patch I found has flushed a sixth time
and is beginning to wane in strength, the road patch
has flushed 3 times and may have one more in it, and
the new patch found today looks like it has one good
flush in it before the COLD weather comes to stay.

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad

Nomadette and I went to the dung pile again
this afternoon and found one of the six
patches fruiting and located a new patch
beginning to pin:

The road patch pins:

Mature fruit + buttons from road patch:

Close up of mature fruit:

Pins from newly discovered patch:

The mature fruit in the pic above weighed 45 grams fresh. Not a very
big specimen, but SOLID! I have never encountered such meaty
fruits!

Went for a afternoon stroll to check up
on the wild Kansas Cube patches and was
pleasantly surprised with the following:

From a distance of about 50 yards, Nomadette
and I spied this first treasure (pic taken from about
25 yards away)

A closer shot of the grouping

New patch pinning

Road patch pinning....

I would have posted a pic, but I am receiving a message regarding reaching
my upload limit (despite having 104 kb remaining in my daily allotment).

Finding Cubes in Northern Kansas, in late Autumn, is not only a rare find,
but totally exhilirating being part of such a find. Anno will be receiving a spore
print next week. Hopefully this strain will be domesticized and available to
everyone. If you look closely, you can see the stipes bluing before being handled.
This strain is solid and POTENT!

That strain needs to be spred and propagated for sure. That strain seems to be unusually but very luckally hardy. Consider yourself extreamly fourtunate to have found such a uniqe and undoubtebly unusual strain. Good find.  :mushroom2:

Here are some more cube pics from
the Kansas location that I haven't
posted. There should be a new update
tomorrow eve:

Another shot of the grouping found 10/23

Notice the stem size and solid nature

Road patch pinning on the 30th

I would have posted another pic, but upload limit has been
reached (so the computer says) but I still have at least
119 kb left... go figure.

Hopefully I will have some nice new pics to post tomorrow eve.
The temps are dropping to the high 30's in the eve and not
getting over 60 during the day.

other people have posted similar robust fruitings of Psilocybe cubensis coming from the mixture of horse dung and stable shavings, just never from kansas..

the reason they are growing in such thick and robust clusters is because of what they are growing from and where/when, so it's not like it is a 'super-strain' because it's the same strain of Psilocybe cubensis that grows throughout the rest of the world

it could undoubtably make a great culture (or strain) to be cultivated, but it isn't much different from the other hundred strains out there today, that is just my opinion, others believe that 'strain' makes a difference

maybe the horse(s) that brought those spores to your pile of dung came from texas or another gulf coast state, as nomad noted

anyways, aside from the cubes, i would place my bet on that same pile of crap producing really-thick amounts of Panaeolus subbalteatus also, sometime during another season..

you could probably somehow propigate the wild cube mycelium, somehow spread the viable cube mycelium.... all sorts of ideas

a completely interesting shroom discovery, completely believeable borderline unbelieveable

I agree whole heartedly with you GG.
You KNOW me personally. I have no motive
for propigating a "homegrown" culture
in the wild and claim that I found wild
cubes in Kansas. Pan subbs are all I expected
to find at this site. Believe me, I was
completely beside myself when I discovered
the first cubes fruiting at this location. I
felt like I was in Florida again!

The substrate has EVERYTHING to do with the
size of the fruits. This area is nothing but
one big poop pile. The horse poo is regularly
spread over the surrounding grounds and fields.
That is why we are finding cubes in the middle
and on the sides of roads in this spot.

The interesting thing about this particular cube
is the fact that it has tolerated temps in the
30's and 40's, and has practically solid stipes.
As far as potency goes, I have always found a
difference between summer and winter cubes in
Florida (summer cubes being big and showy but lack
potency).

At any rate, this find has been quite a highlight in
my mushroom hunting adventures. Never in a million
years would I have thought to find Cubes in Kansas,
during late Autumn!

oh i completely believe in you.
i mean, they're growing so prolifically, that i wouldn't believe someone could actually cultivate what i see in the pictures,, it's all wildness

there is probably Panaeolus subbalteatus mycelium and spores hiding in there too..just waiting to fruit..

im just blown away by your finds dude

people from Oklahoma have posted wild cube pictures here of cubes that are fruiting during the first few frosts of the winter,, it just proves how hearty of a mushroom Psilocybe cubensis can be

..at any rate, it seems the shrooms are thicker in kansas than they are in florida lol!~

Just an overview of some of what I was blessed
to discover at the ol' horse dung pile:

GG, you are right. The mushrooms up here are thicker and more prolific
than in Florida. These monsters are at the very least 10% dry weight.

I wish you were up here to go hunting with me. The good news is Nomadette
is just as much into hunting all types of fungi as well (finally!).
There are plenty of Pan subbs, just too buggy to harvest. At this location,
I have found all kinds of fungi.

Here are some inactive pics:

I should have updated pics tomorrow eve. The weather is warming up
one more time before freezing temps come to stay for awhile. The weather
has been rainy and there should be a little something coming up before
the winter freeze.

I have hunted in Florida for a
combined 8 years. In all those years
I have never found cubes as meaty
and potent as these.

Fungi has the ability to adapt to a
given surrounding. I believe these
cubes have been growing at this location
for quite some time (we have found 8
individual patches in a variety of areas).

The fruiting of these cubes seem to follow
the cold snap that comes with Autumn... like
Weilii, Cyans, and Azures. This makes me wonder
if Weilii are possibly cubes that, over a looooong
period of time (a few centuries or more), have
escaped their natural habitat, adapting to a
different substrate, & developing the characteristics
they currently possess as self preservation...
just a thought.

Cubes in Kansas?!?!?!?!!! Crazy man! Every time I see
them, I still cannot believe what I am seeing!!!

Went out today with Nomadette, not
expecting to find much due to cold,
dry conditions as of late. One of the
patches was flushing one last time
before the hard freeze.

Rather than plunder the beauty we
encountered, we did our best to harvest
the entire underlying mycelial mat, attempting
to give this flush a chance to do its
thing.

i know the topic has been exoughsted here in the shroomery but i have heard of fields in oregon producing cubensis year after year and also seen some ecuadorian producing way less than potential but in fact still producing in oct or nov, damn near freezing temps. no huge fruits like that though, just little wee ones.

This is Urban Legend, Cubes do not grow in Oreegon. You can throw out a terrarium in the spring summer and get some small fruitings or even a larger one but they do not return the following year.

Cubes are a tropical and subtropical species. And cannot stand cold weather.

btw, I scoured Oregon Fields for three tyears before i found my first liberty caps because I was looking foer P. cubensis based on a book by F.C. Ghouled from North Carolina who wrote about cubes and also wrote Amanita muscaria was the famed psilocybine magic mushroom from Mexico. He also misidentified photos of small penis shaped cubes as Panaeolus subbalteatus and that error was followed by jacobs who wrote of panaeolus mushrooms in Meississippi as the 2nd most pic shroom in a pasture (Not true either)

Mj

Cubes do not grow in Oregon unless they are in someones attic or basement.

peaceful nomad,

i keep getting personal messages from people who think your findings are a fake!~

i admit myself that your findings are completely off the hook,

ive been getting personal messages behind the Oklahoma shroomer who is finding Copelandia mushrooms right now also,
and for that i even replied in the topic that those finds are completely off the hook

people are messaging me saying that someone cultivated that patch of shrooms your finding
-which could in fact be a possibility
not to say you're the one doing it
but it's a possibility someone introduced those shrooms

i personally believe what you have is a completely natural yet-obscure natural fruiting.

im just giving you the heads up that people have messaged me and others are thinking other ideas

GG

and i also believe that the Copelandia's from Oklahoma is true also.

It's a good thing I don't define my self worth by the way others
may or may not think of me! I find it funny that those who think my
findings are fake (cultivated rather than wild) are too AFRAID to
post their opinions. They would rather attempt to create an animosity
through derogatory PM's to fellow Shroomerites.

GG, thanks for the "heads up" on the petty, jealous behaviours of
those who are being "haters". I have nothing to prove to anybody
here at the Shroomery. Anybody who has hunted at a horse dung pile
will know that the pile is ALWAYS being disturbed and is NOT an ideal
place for a guerilla grow.

Nomadette and I have found 8 separate patches at this location. The areas
we discovered these patches (in the middle of a path, on the side of a road,
in a recently disturbed area of the pile, etc.) were DEFINITELY NOT cultivated
by humans and are wild patches.

Next spring, I am going to bring this find to the attention of
Kansas University's Mycology Department. I think global warming has
something to do with finding P. cubensis in NE Kansas (and the cubes
and copes in OK).

GG, you KNOW myself and Nomadette. You know the type of people we are.
Lying and decieving are not part of our lifstyle. I thought we were
sharing an exciting, fantabolous find with the Shroomery community,
not expecting to be demeaned behind the scenes.

Thanks again for the props on the find, GG. I am honored to have met
and developed a friendship with you  Perhaps someday you can
visit up here and we will go mushie hunting!

I will probably make this one of my last posts. I find it a colossal
waste of my time to take the time to go hunting, take pics, clean the
haul, take more pics, and post the results.... only to be disrespected
behind my back by a few small minded individuals too frightened to
speak their minds in an open forum. For those of you who think that
this post is a lie , have the cajones to state so rather than
hide behind a PM to another Shroomery member!

Namaste,

Peaceful Nomad

IF you are being doubted then post a picture of a local newspaper in front of the mushrooms. I have done this on numerous ocassions and it ends any disbelief which someone has.

The boy from Oklahoma promised he would post a picture of his shrooms on a local paper, maybe I asked him to to clarify so people would not doubt him.

I believe you no mad.

If they could be grown by humans, then they easily could survive in the wild.

I know it is hard for some of these amateurs to believe, but mushrooms are completely capable of growing with humain aid.

I have found cubes in NE Kansas too. Not as nice as your, however.

Yeah, give KU a call, I am tired of not seeing cubensis in Kansas field guides, that and the famous "poisonous" listing.

Hang in there 'mad.......jethro knows.

the guy from Oklahoma posted a picture of the copelandia shrooms on a newpaper,
and i still find it hard to believe lol

------------

Mjshroomer, have you ever picked Psilocybe cubensis from horse manure like this?
-they grow differently than they do on cow/buffalo turds.

---------

peaceful nomad is an honest man, and a hard working man who doesnt have the time to make stories up about shrooms and upload all these pictures for us to see.

i think it just has to do with the horse-dung
they grow differently from horse dung / stable shavings.

-------

also, there have already been Several Oklahoma shroomers post pictures of their Psilocybe cubensis finds, right here at this forum, and they even claim them to keep fruiting after the first couple frosts of the winter.

it's insane, global warming, i believe it.
it seems like it is happening before our very eyes.

--------

also, the copelandia's from Oklahoma are completely off the hook,
but i am believeing it completely.
if you look at his picks you can tell they are in fact wild Copelandia's.

They are not wild copes. Just copes. No manured mushroom is considered wild.

They are common in their habitats as are cyans in alder.

Remember the 100,000 shroom patch in England. i posted the information a few years backk. They mulched a race track and the cyans went all the way around the track in the mulch. Identified by several mycologists from local universities in the area in England.

Here many pickers refer to finding cyans intheir natural habitat, blackberries. But then that is just one habitat of the genera. There are close to abotu twnety magic shrooms world wide which can be found directly in manure besides P. cubensis and copelandia cyanescens.

hjavea a shroomy dayin manure

holy... i lived in NE KS 20+ yrs (in fact my profile says i still do...) looked hard and never seen anything like this. I wondered as well whether someone (not you nomad) was attempting to cultivate, but it seems that that someone would have harvested as well... looks like a damn good find. I know some psilocybes have been reported in Kansas, the kaw valley mycological society has a book of kansas mushrooms that mentions this (you can find it at the lawrence public library... it has a silvery-grey cover), though i can't remember the particular species they mentioned. But hey it is quite humid there, some years more than others, and if the spores made were there there isn't a doubt in my mind that kansas would eventually have the right weather for them to grow outdoors. yea kansas, and congrats nomad... by the way, do I know you?

Thanks for the kind characterization GG. As far as the growth parameters
of the cubes I and Nomadette have been finding, I agree the horse dung /
stable shaving mixture has a great deal with the size, potency, and
gregariousness of this particular P. cubensis. Furthermore, I have noticed
a difference in the warmer weather fruitings VS cold weather.

Quote:

I believe you no mad. If they could be grown by humans, then they easily could survive in the wild.

Yeah, give KU a call, I am tired of not seeing cubensis in Kansas field guides

Thanks jethro, I am going to be contacting a University Mycologist next season.

I went out to the dung pile this afternoon and found an AMAZING fruiting that
blew me away! I will be posting pics of my finds later.

Namaste,

what can i say nomad, ive been checking up on your posts for the last few weeks and i am still speechless. i hope you take some spores to a biologist to see whether or not they are a new strand of cubes...be sure and give them a worthy name.

Just a hearty cube growing in horse dung.
I believe some of the horses were stabled
in a Gulf Coast state and brought the spores
back with them to KS. I would not doubt that
there are cubes in the neighboring cow pastures.
I probably will never hunt them... gave that up
in Florida.

I was thinking that since Kansas has had kind of an indian summer, and just recently getting its first freeze, that there might be another fruiting. I ya see had the same idea.

I am in Kansas too. I have started outdoor patches that have gone wild, none of them have lasted more then two seasons. I have to ask... This patch, is it about 30-45 miles South West of Kansas City? I may know the spot. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post2123374
I have noticed that most of the shrooms fruited in cooler temps have solid stems. I am amazed at the sizes you have found.

We recently had six inches of snow. My intuition told me the
core temps of the horse dung pile would maintain a comfortable
existence while the blanket of snow protected and hydrated
the cube mycelium.

Low and behold, P. Cubensis.... IN THE SNOW... In NE KS.....
In LATE November!!!! I guess cubes can adapt to a variety
of environments and not quite the tropical / sub-tropical
species as was originally thought. Global warming may have
something to do with cubes in OK and KS.

I checked my camera before leaving the house and all was
working well. When I arrived at the site, my camera decided
not to cooperate... the batteries where showing too low to
take a pic. I shut off the camera, pulled the first patch
I found, said a short prayer for the camera to work, turned
it back on and it worked (for a short time)! Here are the few
pics I was able to snap before the batteries died on me:

That's all for now. Thanks for all the replies to the previous
post. This trips me out every time I locate new patches at this
dung pile. I am finding more quality/quanity finds here than I was
in Florida!

Peaceful Nomad

I useto live in oklahoma about 10 miles from tulsa and I found 2 alone cubies in my sisters horse pasture I couldn't fucking believe my eyes. I'm guessing dry weight was only about half a gram or even less and I tripped insanely hard more like eating 4-5 grams of texas cubies and the trip was alot happier.. Does anyone else find texas cubies trip to be kinda.. dirty? Those shrooms always give me strange side-effects body spazzims n stuff they are mean little bastards  :mad2:

Thanks for the kind replies  This is truly
a special find! I fully expect this particular site
to be loaded with Cubes and Subbs next Spring.

As far as Psychoslut's reply, I have this to say:

Grow up: I still live at home and will risk my parents house to grow illegal shrooms

Become honest:
I am willing to rip somebody off by lying about dry weight

And get some experience in mushroom hunting before you insult others who do
have experience.

I guess I cultivated the following Panaleous sphinctrinus as well!:

No other pics for now. My camera is on the fritz.

bcustom, the daytime temps that week were barely breaking forty, and night time
temps were from high 20's to low 30's.

it almost looks like the mycelium is generating heat

    #3446114 - 12/04/04 02:53 PM (20 years, 4 days ago)

Went out to check to see if there were
any freak fruitings of the KS Cubes, after
receiving sustained overnight freezing temps
for the past week.

Something was wrong with my battery pack of
my camera and was lucky to get the pics I
did. Dec 4th and this mycelium fights against
all odds! This is what I found:

Taking refuge under some loose stable shavings,
I found these beauties:

Some frost bitten cubies past their prime:

Found a few more hiding under some shavings and grasses:

The same grouping showing the mycelium in the lower portion of the pic:

Hearty suckers! Next spring should bring a bumper crop!!
