A colorful mushroom collection
    #3268524 - 10/23/04 04:21 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Found some cool stuff.

Armillaria.

This Hygrophorus species is colorful. The color varies in them a lot. Sometimes they have greens and blues on the caps, they are extremely slippery.

Another species of Hygrophurus, this one has some green tinges on the cap.

I love these witch hats they are cool looking.

I'm thinking that these are Gyms, not totally sure yet got to look into them some more first. They have that bitter taste to them (no I didnt eat any - just tasted a tiny piece).

Hericium - tooth-like fungus.

This chicken of the woods was huge. I could see it from like 100 feet away. I didnt pick any, but the undersides of them are white.

Hello again eris..
5 could possibly be
Gymnopilus liquiritae I've found
similar gym's and that's as close
as I could get to an ID..On them..
There doesn't seem to be alot of info
about them online..

The last I would ID as l. cinncinnatus.. a
relative of laetiporus sulphurus..the white pore
surface is the indicator... edible.. similar to chicken
of the woods.... Nofindum.. Nice pictures by the way... Nofindum..

Thanks guys. Cool info nofindum!
There is a book on the gymnopilus genus that might be a good addition to the book collection. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books
However I cant even find a description of the book. It would kind of be a mystery purchase.. not worried though for only 15$.
But from what I have read, a microscope is usually required for species IDs.

If you didn't pick 'em you missed a couple good edibles there. The "some kind of tooth-like fungus" is Hericium erinaceus, also called Lion's Mane Mushroom, a choice edible that, when fresh, young and fried in butter, tastes a lot like crab or lobster (in butter, of course). They develop a somewhat sour taste in age. The bright orange one with the white underside is a variety of Laetiporus sulphureus, also called Sulphur Shelf or Chicken of the Woods. It's also a popular edible, although some people get stomach upsets from it so it should be eaten with caution the first time.

Happy mushrooming!

Wow, I got to go back there and pick the Hericium erinaceus!! The description you gave there really sparked my interest. I love crab and lobster with butter sauce.
I usually overlook or ignore these types of fungi and head for the gilled mushrooms. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I notice the species in my books.
I think if and when I try them, I will start out with only a small amount to be sure that I am not allergic or sensitive to it.

Very beautiful shots eris!

Sounds like you should indeed go back for those Lions Mane, Hericium erinaceus.  Very tasty!  Odd looking though...huh!?!?

Just goes to show...some of the weirdest looking things...people included...can be very cool things!

L

Almost forgot to mention eris...I was out on my land and took some really neat shots in my forest.  Had to stomach crawl, militarty style to get to some of them.  I sat down on a stump to make a couple adjustments to my camera...pushed the wrong button...and POOF...lost them ALL!  Needless to say that did NOT make my day!  :frown:

So unfortunate.
