Tyvek filters
    #3268871 - 10/23/04 05:52 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Okay... 60qt millet jars were inoculated via karo culture. Upon shaking them I noticed something that raised my eyebrows... I first put on the disc part of the lid, then the tyvek over top of it, then screwed the band on. Once the jars were adequately shaken I noticed that some millet has found it's way between the tyvek and the disc lid and I cannot get it out without removing the lids. Is this a problem? Will it make the jars more susceptible to contamination?

Tyvek won't let any contams in, but, it will wick water (slowly): so if the millet soaks the tyvek in nutritous water, contams might start to colonize the tyvek. Still, it would have to get past the lid as well. So, just make sure to keep a foil lid over it, and wipe the top of the tyvek with a paper towel if water ever starts to bead up on top of it.

tyvek doesnt actualy wick anything, its a plastic, HDPE, it will allow water vapor
to escape but tyvek is actualy a 2 sided prouduct, its use in home construction is
as a vapor barrier to prevent moisture from entering, if the slick side is placed
towards the inside of the jar the rate the moisture escapes should be lower

Paper towels and the like are a haven for contams.

Use a paper towel, but wetted with alcohol.

another way to determine the 'slick' side it to use packaginf tape...
the tape will pull cleanly from the slick side and will stick and pull fibers from
teh other.

i'm using PF jars of OI and they're taking forever, i'm thinking the tyvek will help them out when i do the next batch.
1. so which way should the tyvek filters be facing generally speaking?

2. can i just use cut pieces of it instead of the metal lid, and put the ring on on top of it?

OI's were fast for me! I'm doing grain with tyvek though. Good luck!
