Forum Mind Reading
    #3268618 - 10/23/04 04:41 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

I always find it amusing how frequently some posters will attempt to "read the mind" of others by telling them what the other is thinking or by responding to totally non-existent words/thoughts. I am not talking about mere clarification nor simple misunderstandings.

Not surprising to me (but should be surprising to those who believe in telepathy) is that this form of mind reading is invariably wrong.

Are these posters on drugs? Do they have severe reading disorders? Or do they truly believe that have the inside track on another's thoughts?

"I always find it amusing how frequently some posters will attempt to "read the mind" of others"

You mind read that?

"telling them what the other is thinking or by responding to totally non-existent words/thoughts."

assuming is not mind reading.

Youve answered your own question, tho you had to add a lable to that statement so you would have something to bitch at

Life is confusion, its ok

This isn't just a problem with internet boards, swami. In my experience most people will try to take what they ASSUME someone is thinking and make it look as if that person WAS thinking that. It's a shitty deal, and I wich less people would do this :frown:

One thing I think would help is if people can get over the "is-ness" we use in English language (maybe others, I don't know). Someone will say something like "You think that..." when what they SHOULD be saying is "You appear to think that...". That simple little change of "you think" to "you appear to think" makes all the difference.

We must all realise that we are only observing this Reality of which we are all a part. There is no way you can KNOW BEYOND A DOUBT what happens outside of your own consciousness...you can only go by what your senses tell you...by how things appear to be.

There was a great read posted a few months back called E-Prime, though it didn't get nearly as much feedback as I had expected it would. Here's the thread:

umm swami, you did this just yesterday in banjankri's thread.
banjankri wrote 'great benefits' which you substituted with 'better person', or was that a mere clarification?
what's your excuse, drugs? reading disorder? telepathy?

We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I see this all the time in PAL. People assume that because I'm libertarian, I have no compassion for the poor, or that I'm selfish with my money, or support oppression of the working class, none of which are true. Even when I tell someone why I believe what I believe, some still second guess me and try to tell me what my underlying motivations are.

and as for your question swami

"Are these posters on drugs? Do they have severe reading disorders? Or do they truly believe that have the inside track on another's thoughts? "

who said anything about drugs?  and is there an assumption there that a person can't read as clearly on drugs?

when you mentioned "these posters," are you referring to those who believe in telepathy, or towards those who tell you how you are thinking/feeling?

It was a question (NOT a declarative) which is normally indicative of an attempt to clarify. "Great benefit" was quite vague wasn't it?

As I started the thread, it was very likely to be me.

...and is there an assumption there that a person can't read as clearly on drugs?
No assumption there for the more popular illicit drugs. This website is not the Aspirinery, is it?

There was a great read posted a few months back called E-Prime, though it didn't get nearly as much feedback as I had expected it would.

Two problems Tren:

1. You actually expected people to *gasp* read an article. Pull out the juicy bit as a marketing ploy leading to the article.

2. You are not as controversial as the Swam. I set myself up so that people can take a shot. You are very polite and thoughtful. Where is the "fun" in that? Do you think people are actually interested in substance?

Assumption is natural, and perfectly fine, in some cases.

No matter what you say we all assume things, every day, all day.

When you wake up in the morning, you assume that everything in your house is the way you left it when you went to sleep.

When you get in your car you assume it is going to start.

When you drive down the street you assume that if a light is green, you can safely travel through the intersection.

So lets say one morning you wake up, and your apartment has been raided.

You get in your car and the son of a bitch wont turn over. After popping the hood you notice some really bad corrosion around the battery connections.

You friend comes to pick you up for work, and on the way, someone runs a red light and t-bones you.

Did you get what you had coming because you assumed it wouldn't? Or is it just bad luck?

Just my two cents.
