Boosting a HEPA?

Does anyone know of a way to boost a HEPA rated at only 99% to 99.9%? Wally-World has some HEPA's for sale for $29 but they are only 99% which is like 2 microns instead of .3 microns. Could you hose down the filter with lysol or maybe use tyvak in some way to boost it up to 99.9% for use in a glovebox. Or should I just toss it in a casing room and save up for a HEPA vacuum for the box?

It's .9% and actually yes it does make a difference. Use your head and research before responding. There is a reason that there is a price difference of $30 or $40 between a 99% and 99.9%. Tons of tiny baddies in that .9%.

hey madhatr. walmart has one for bout 30 bucks and it has an ionizer included that will make those little particles bigger. its only 99% effective but in all reality once it ionizes it should up to bout 99.9%. and use some lysol that kills 99.99% i say with all this good stuff you should be safe.

No theres not tons of tiny baddies, there is .9% of hepa filtered air with contams, which is most likely nothing. You aren't gonna get any more performance getting an extra percent, they say it's 99% instead of 100% because it is near impossible to keep out every single teeny tiny contam, if they said 100% ppl could get them for false advertising. It's like overclocking your computer by 50mhz...even though it is more, it is not gonna give you any real world performance boost. Lemon has the right idea with disinfectant.

unh....the difference is the size of particle filtered...toss those 99%(fake hepa) in the trash and get a 99.97%(true hepa) like kramer uses

Sorry man, your flat out wrong. If your doing something where you need sterile work done, you NEED a 99.97 (99.9 at LEAST). The difference between what it filters is huge. It is not the amount of air it filters but the amount of things in the air it removes. For normal use 99% is fine (I have them running outside of each of my closets) but if you want sterile, it won't do. The analogy about computers does not match up at all because your talking about a regular home PC. A PC that is running calculations nonstop where every mhz is important (such as in a glove box where EVERY speck of contams needs to be removed, or calculated), 50mhz is something.

I'm sorry, but this thread makes me weep for the future of mankind.
No, there is no way to magically make your 99% HEPA filter filter 99.9%.
An Ionizer does not make particles "bigger". It positively charges them, where they may or may not be captured by the negativly charged plates.
HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air(filtration). There is no set standard. Anybody can call their air filter "High Efficiency". What is "efficient"?... That's why there is such a wide variety of "HEPA" filters. We tend to say that a "true" HEPA filter will filter at least 99.97% at 0.3 microns.
It does not mean 0.9% of the air passing through is "unfiltered". The percentage has to do with the minimum particle size.
When a manufacturer states that their filter is 99% efficient at 2 microns, it means that it captures 99% of particles passing through the filter that are 2 microns or bigger. That means that both 1% of particles ~2 microns get through, and that the filter is less than 99% efficient dealing with particles under 2 microns. They don't give you that percentage, so for all you know the filter could let 90% of all particles in the 1 micron range through and 100% of particles 0.5 microns and less through. That is a bad thing.
Lysol only kills 99.9% of things that it touches. It is not going to do anything if you spray your filter down with it, except maybe make sure that the things trapped in the filter are killed and possibly reduce it's efficiency by clogging micropores.
