Mushroom Kit Casing/Fruiting Question
    #3267903 - 10/23/04 03:19 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Hello fellow myco-lovers! Recently I have taken my love of mushrooms to the next level and decided to buy a kit off the net. I live in Canada so I bought a kit from BC that contained Mycelium SPAWN as opposed to spores. It's been awesome so far, and everything is going well. I am almost past the pasteurization/spawning stage, my substrate has been chilling for a good 10 days, and white with mycel-networks. On monday I will begin casing, putting the soil over the spawning substrate, and hopefully in about two weeks I'll have a great flush of fresh mush!

My question is regarding the casing and fruiting process. I am a little worried about contamination. Once the casing begins, my kit is basically just in a tupperware container in a dark closet. It's not that the area isn't sterile, but its 'not not' sterile if you know what I mean. I'm only going to be taking the top off to spray the soil with water to keep it moist everyday. How susceptable are the mushrooms to mold? I know if green mold appears, I should cover the mouldy area with salt. Is this really that effective against mold? Is there anything else I can do to prepare or prevent this from happening? I've posted some pictures of 10 days ago and present day. Let me know, Thanks!

casings are more susceptable to contams than cakes, i tend to be one of the most un-cleanest people there is and mine do fine  if your worried maybey put a lid with some filter patches over it??
