That they were growing from wood and had an orangish-rusty colored spore print suggests they were Gymnopilus. The first photo has hints of a possible ring on the stem. Do you recall if they had clear rings on the stems?

Happy mushrooming!

That does look like it could be a Gymnopilus. Pholiota is another possibility, but Pholiotas have brown spores. Lepiota is not a possibility because they don't grow on wood, and because they have unmistakably white spores.

Cool habitat!

Most of the Gyms I find in Ohio are active. If you could get a good photo of them fruiting you could probably get photo of the month.

did not notice a clear ring
but it did have a veil...much like a cub (whitish)
the spores could have been brownish?
and i do remember squeezing it trying to bruise it and it turned a kinda brown/orange but not a deep coloring

As shroomydan suggests, Pholiota is also a possibility, especially if the spore print is not orangish. Microscopic examination of the spores would separate the two definitively, as Pholiota spores have a germ pore and Gymnopilus do not. Also, most Pholiota spores are smooth and most Gymnopilus spores are warty.

Assuming Gymnopilus, we can't really go beyond placing them in subgenus Annulati because of the partial veil. A lot of the classification of Gymnopilus is done with microscopic examination of the spores.

Happy mushrooming!
