You do not want direct contact silica is not a good thing to ingest. Breathing it as we all know is extremely bad as well as having it rupture as in breast implants can be equally as bad so I'd say treat it as harmful and think about it, there is no need for direct contact. GL and stay safe bro

Silica gel is nearly harmless, which is why you find it in food products. Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is the same material found in quartz. The gel form contains millions of tiny pores that can adsorb and hold moisture. Silica gel is essentially porous sand.

This is not the same as silicone which is used in breast augmentation

I use silica gel as a desiccant. My mushrooms do not just come in contact with it, I literally bury them in it. The only repercussion is that they become crunchy dry. The reason I use silica gel is that it reusable and harmless. If any particles stick, you can easily remove them by shaking, or gently brushing with an old toothbrush or soft artists brush. So, no worries.

I agree silica gel and silicon gel are two separate things noxy but think about it would you want to ingest something that you really don't need to, I mean I've never had to chew any silica gel personally but it just doesn't sound too appealing. :frown: BTW what food products contain silica gel? I know it's dangerous for pregnant women but then alot of things are :frown:

I did find an interesting link although not an FDA link it does supports noxy's statement Silica Gel
This was USDA Meat Division approved though: silica gel up to 2% is permitted to be used as an anti-caking agent in salt, seasonings or curing mixtures for use in meat products, without reference thereto on the labels of the meat food products. I also read there is a food grade silica gel. So theres the verdict I won't killed you in small quantities but large quantities can cause cancer just like large quantities of almost anything! And if you consumed 800lbs. of it you would shrivel up like a human raisin!

Older types of self indicating silica gel apparently contain a cobolt compound as the indicator. Cobalt is probably not good to be eating..

I just started doing this myself, and I found this thread while searching for some answers. Thanks!

Wow! I just got a great idea! The next time my wife gripes about retaining water or feeling bloated when she's on her period, I'm going to dunk in a tub of silica for a couple of hours. Any thoughts?
