Size DOES matter! ?
    #3267349 - 10/23/04 12:02 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Hello folks,

Still investigating and working to my first grow experiment. Read the growing instructions which are around. I am planning to start with cakes, and think I will use the "bon mamman" jars.

Now I have some questions about the size of the incubator and also the fruiting chamber.

Incubator.
How much space must there be between, and above, the jars in here?

Growing chamber.
Same question, I read it must be 5 cm (2 inches?) between the jars.

Casing
When i apply the casing method, do the same rules apply? Do I need more/equal or less space for the same amount of substrate in the fruiting chamber?

I want to know this so I buy the correct sized Rubbermaid incubator and fruitchamber boxes....

Thanks in advance for helping me out once more!

MF

Welcome!

For your incubator, you can stack as close as you can fit them. You can also stack one on top of each other provided you have foil cover on each jar.

For fruiting chamber, you'll need about 1 1/2 in to 3 inches between them. I started out with 1" and found mushrooms bumping caps REALLY quickly, so now I have 2", but I still had to turn each cake once or twice so that the mushrooms weren't touching each other. I found turning works to save some space because some mushrooms turn upwards fasters than others and you can fit more cakes in if you turn them to correct angles.

If you do casing, you don't need any space between casing. I'd suggest 1/2" or so your fingers can go in there if you want to take pictures outside the casing, though.

Good luck!

Sam

Ok, cool Sam!

But if i put the jars on top of each other doesnt that block the possibility for the mycelium to breeth some fresh air? Or is that absolutely no issue? Havent read before about stacking them.
Not that I dont trust you, but...  hehehe

I am a bad calculator,  does casing then get more mushrooms from the same surface as cakes?

Today I bought my first thing for my mushroomfarm; brown rice flour! :p

And I was checking out some rubbermaid cases. Is it bad if the growing chamber is completely transparant, I mean all sides and the cover/lid?

Ok much good things from the cultivation n00b.. ;D

Regards,
MF

For the growing chamber, I'd think that keeping things dark would be best.

For the fruiting chamber, totally clear would allow you to see what is going on easier and give you plenty of lighting options.

it doesn't matter how many you stack on top of each other. you aren't sealing anything. Diffusion will always occur, same reason air leaks out of a baloon. It's not totally sealed. They will get more than enough fresh air stacked.

Yes thanks, I mixed upp I meant fruiting chamber, but ok total transparancy isnt a bad thing, obvious cause in nature they dont fruit in darkness either..

Another thing, I am planning to build my own PMP. Do I need anything like articial light? The room temperature will be between 60-70 F, maybe an artificial light IN the PMP can hold the temperature around the 70..

Or a bad thought with all that humidity?

Sincerely,
MF

I use a small 10W compact fluorescent aquarium bulb that I found at wal-mart for 5$ inside my tub for light. I really like it's spectrum; it puts out a lot of energy between 350 and 500nm, which is what mycelium respond to the most.

I was using it for a heat source at first, but I found it inadequate.. plus the fact that you need it on 24/7, which is undesirable once pinning starts.

So I went to a thrift store and picked up a 55W heating pad for 3$. On it's "Medium" setting, it keeps my temps at about 73?F when the light isn't on, and 75?F when the light is on.

I'm using a huge 30 gallon sterilite tub though, with about 2" of water in the bottom and 3" of perlite, so there is quite a bit of area to heat up.

The temps in my house are only around 60 - 65?F.

Hey, mushroomfriend, watch out for the clear fruiting chamber...
It's gonna be growing in wierd directions.  I remember seeing a picture of 1 crawling on the bottom of the pod.

And they is a huge difference between 68 and 75F fruiting temperature.  Probably looking at a sizable yield and time difference.

Good luck!

But Sam,

Must I use additional light for the FC? I would like to use it mostly for heating purposes. I read not to put it IN the PMP cause electriciy and humidity are NO good combination! :p

OR should I use an aquarium heater in the water between the geolite?

Cause I want the temp to be above 70F.

Thanks for your assistance again!

MF
