Hawaiian Mushrooms ID
    #3266075 - 10/22/04 11:26 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Hello,
Here are some pictures of some recently harvested mushrooms.
Habitat: Growing on old patches of cow dung and cow dung fertilized grass
Gills: Black, not attached
Stem: Blue when brused, white when not, solid
Cap: Goldish brown, smooth texture
Scent: No strong special scent. Smells like a regualr mushroom

Can some one help identify these mushrooms from Hawaii. Thanks

Aloha!

looks like you have yourself a mix of Paneolous mushrooms!

3 of them in the bottom pic appear to be possibly active to me... i see some blue bruising and look like possible Copelandia cyanescans... the others with red stems look to be inactive Paneulous.  take some spore prints.

welcome to the shroomery, and check out the FAQ next time you post and ID request!

first, dear, you dont know which 3 i'm talking about, do you?

second, i would wait for others opinions as i've never found cope cyans before and i am going off a *guess* by a couple blurry pictures.

what was it growing on?  blueing?  etc... see the FAQ on how to post a good description

ya don't eat them... you have some actives in there, but you have possibly up to 3 species, any of which could poison you.. You need to separate the good ones from the not

The bottom picture, those big ones could be copes, the small ones have a different stem color, different looks, different species...

get a pros advice and don't eat anything, besides, I think the cope dose is higher then 3 mushrooms fresh

Yes, and you should always keep your shrooms seperate, like red stem and white stems?

Those red stemmed Panaeolus mushrooms w mixed with the Copelandia cyanescens shrooms are common in Hawaii, especially on oahu at Kualoa ranch and at the u of H livestock and experimental farm on the north shroe.

On a pick by pick basis, most people who collect Copelandias in Hawaii have about one Panaewolus to every 25-50 Copelandia mushroms int heir bags.

I have seen people piock and eat them on numerous ocassions. They are common in a cowpie loaded with Copelandia shrooms. the caps mimic the C. cyanescens and noone notices the red stems until they lay them out later at home.

No one that I personally know who has picked and eaten a few have had any medical problems from them, although it just goes to show that many pickers still eat what they collect.

In Hawaii, there really are no poisonous shrooms growign in the manure of the cattle on the islands.

I have heard some students say that if you eat enough of them you will get a mild buzz. Of course I know that is not true. But many people still grab handfuls of shrooms from their buddies collection bags and eat a few along with the copes.

Have a sheroomy day and try to look carefully at the stems when you pick them. RRemember a cope stem can be from pure white to a yellowish straw color to evan a beige tan or deerskin brown in color.

you are messing around with things that can harm you if you aren't careful, people can spend a long long time hunting and iding mushrooms before they ever find an active one, and i think the point mj was trying to make was about the amount of shrooms in that area that look similar, and people don't find as many actives as they think and they eat a bunch of questionable shrooms, and although they didn't get sick, they didn't get off either. it would most likely do you no good to eat those.

How accurate is this? Are there any poisonous look-a-likes that grow in Hawaii?

hmm.  please tell me more about these red stemmed tropicalis', SWIM has picked and eaten a ton of mushies exactly like the ones picured and gotten a medium-high trip - by a ton i mean about 3/4 cup fresh chopped stems and all.
would this be a proper process?  collect, bring the shrooms home and lay them out, remove the dark stemmed ones and consume the rest.  - seems like such a waste.
SWIM has noticed that the darker stems have a stringier texture and their caps are (more watery?)  how do these inactives relate to the actives? - genetically?  what percentage of shroomy strains also have inactives?
as an afterthought i think i remember the darker stems being more blackish/bluish rather than red. the rest are pale+translucent

wow I didn't see the date and was like "wtf', mushroomer is back???" you should get some pictures and post a I'D request. Panaeolus  identification has come a long way in the past 8 years and someone here can probably differentiate between the different species.
