Boiling Jars/PC
    #3266032 - 10/22/04 11:12 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I've been looking into whether I am going to boil my substrate jars to sterilize them or if I should break down and purchase a pressure cooker. I have been looking at some low-end ($20 or so)pc's because I really don't want to drop $75 on one. Are these cheap pc's even worth the money? Questions are 1) If I am doing 12 half pint jars, what size pc (quarts) will I need? 2) If I decide to go with boiling, are there any significant drawbacks? Thanks in advance for any info!

It depends. Should say how many pint, 1/2 pint, and quart jars it will hold on the box. 2) Eh, pcing is much more effective. Damn near 100% more effective then boiling in my past. ALl this is IMO. Boiling left damn near 90% contams while PCing left _none_

Well sounds like if I want to do this the right way I gotta fork out the cash for a pressure cooker. Thanks for the info guys. I am sure I will be glad I did down the road!

I don't know if you have big flea markets around your home but here we have many and I can find very large pressure cookers, 21 quart of more, for under 50 bucks

I've gotten two large PC's (over 20 quart..hold 9 and 10 quart jars, one more then the other because of lid shape) off ebay. Total spent on both to get them shipped was just over 50 bucks.
