Storing coir?
    #3264957 - 10/22/04 03:40 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Hmm, you have to add water to coir to make it expand... How do you store it after it's been expanded? I only need to use a very small amount of a brick and they're too expensive to waste :/ I tried to chisel off a piece with little luck.

add water and do the whole thing, then store the rest in a plastic bag and either PC or microwave everytime you have to use it

Coir is expensive? I picked up a brick for $1.95, and used only a tiny corner of it which made WAY too much..

I just put the extra in a bowl, covered with saran wrap.. I'll nuke it like usual when I need it.

The only coir I could find in town was $4.95 for a brick. Too expensive to merit wasting what I didn't use.

I went ahead and pasteurized the leftover.

4.95 is too expensive? Cheap ass, lol. I PC everything no matter what... but $5 max is so cheap for like 5-10 casings.

Uhh, too expensive to just throw away 90% of the brick, yeah it is. Did you not read? Am I cheap or just not wasteful?

Besides, I'm not even using it for casings.

If you're wasting 90% you're rediculous. Use a smaller chunk per casing. It's not hard to understand.

like prisoner said, saw or cut off a chunk and just reconsitute that part of it. Very simple.

What the hell don't you understand?

I'm. Not. Using. It. For. Casings.

I used a minute fraction of it to germinate some peruvian torch seeds. The reason I posted here is because I knew people in this particular forum would be most familiar with coir.

Anyway, I pasteurized the moist remains in an oven bag for 3 hours so I'm not worried about it going bad.

You can easily break peices off, you need to use a knife (large butcher kind best) and wedge it in the side. They break in layers and if you don't go from the side you won't get it. Then only use the size peice you need. When I use it these days I use the whole brick at once and make a really large boil of casing mix, sterilize it all in jars and keep it like that until I use it. It should be fine they way you have done it.
