Go to mycosupply. They will sell and ship cheap and are a sponsor. Also, no. Don't use dirt. Not nutrious for shrooms at all. The verm is mostly there for moisture and as a contam barrier. Dirt wouldn't be good IMO

Vermiculite??
No it isn't. Nobody in their right mind would use vermiculite for packing material, the sh!t is nasty to work with.

Got any sources to back that up? There's just no way.
Dry vermiculite is dangerous, you should technically be wearing a face mask when you're working with it. There is no way someone would use it as packaging material. Can you imagine recieving a package, opening it up, to find a cloud of volcanic dust billowing in your face? It's messy and nasty..
It's also more expensive than regular polystyrene packaging peanuts.... It doesen't make any sense.

I stand corrected, and baffled. I'm betting that this is a UK thing though, I have never heard of such a thing in the US. That seems mind boggling. I certainly wouldn't want to recieve a package where vermiculite was used as packing material! Weird. After a bit of searching, it does look like it's used as packaging material for some things in the US. But mostly for shipping dangerous chemicals where leaks need to be absorbed. Thanks for the info!

Just think if its used as something as dispensible as packaging, and -as whasisname pointed out- polystyrene is cheap as chips, how much is that twat Arthur Bowers making by putting it in 5 litre bags and selling it to poor idiot growers of things like us..

I received a test kit from Dance Safe using vermiculite as packing material around the chemicals. Vermiculite is safe, there's no reason to be worried about inhaling a little dust from it. If you are worried about asbestos in it, if memory serves... that was traced to only one mine, and it was not in all the vermiculite from that mine and no vendors of vermiculite are even using product from that mine anymore.
-------------------- To call humans 'rational beings' does injustice to the term, 'rational.' Humans are capable of rational thought, but it is not their essence. Humans are animals, beasts with complex brains. Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

No, it's not necessarily the asbestos, but I thought it was generally considered unhealthy to breathe in any particulate matter....
All bags of vermiculite sold in the US do have the asbestos warning on them, though.. regardless of if it is something to worry about or not.
My bag says.. "This product contains vermiculite. Vermiculite may contain asbestos(a chemical which is known to the State of California to cause cancer). The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that although consumers face only a minimal health risk from using vermiculite products at home or in their gardens, it is recommended that consumers use vermiculite outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, avoid creating dust by keeping vermiculite damp during use, and avoid bringing dust into the home on clothing."
But yeah, I wasn't trying to be an ass or anything, I just didn't realize that it was used for packaging, and I was thankful for the correction.
