Sellouts!
    #3265247 - 10/22/04 07:06 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Ok, so who didn't sell out? Can someone please name for me ONE band who made it and didn't sell out?

It drives me crazy how people can talk all kinds of shit about musicians who are doing something they love while shit-talkers work 9-5 licking someone elses balls.

Devo made it big. They didn't start big...but I saw a Swiffer commercial yesterday and they were all "Swiff it good!" So are they sell outs?

How about the Doors? Didn't they sell Break on through to some car company in the 70's? They're legends in the music industry, are they sell outs?

And No Doubt. They started out as a little punk/ska band is SoCal, and they are international superstars and have touched everything from punk, ska, pop, rock, and now they're experimenting with this retro sound. So they made it... does that make them sell outs? I think their success gives them creative freedom.

Are Green Day sell outs? They went from Dookie to American Idiot and all that weirdo shit inbetween before they kind of settled back into thier original sound. Are they sell outs for experimenting?

What does it take? Is everyone a sellout because they made it? I don't get it.

Truer words were never spoken, Bom!  People get real critical of bands as soon as they are famous.  If my band ever got catapulted to "superstar" status I wouldn't care what anyone said about me.  I would continue to do what I enjoyed and make a few bucks along the way.  And if I wanted to do covers of John Denver tunes for the next 10 years you could all kiss my ass!!

To the best of my knowledge, Tool has never done a commercial.

Hey cool! I get to give the same legal explanation twice in the same day!

Under US copyright law, you DO NOT need a songwriter's permission to record their song! You can't use THEIR recording of it, but you can make your own. All you have to do is pay them a fee specified in the Copyright law. That's it. If the writer doesn't like the fact that you recorded their song for your dumbass commercial it's just tough shit for them.

So just because a song is used in a commercial that does not mean the band gave its permission.

Now if the Band's own recording of the song is used, you can conclude it was a sellout.

I don't like bands that lots of people like simply for
the fact that lots of people like them.

Madonna is a sell out.

she pulled her anti-war video when artists were catching
heat for speaking their minds.

people who compromise their artistic voice in the name
of public approval are sell outs.

that and canada, canada is a fucking sell oot!

Fugazi rocks! I don't run into many Fugazi fans though. I don't think they could have 'sold out'. They never got famous enough for that.

But they still rock!

Just because they make it big, doesnt make a band a sellout. Its what they do when they make it big that makes them sellouts. Look at sya trent reznor or david bowie. they have made it big and i dont consider them sellouts, but thats just my opinion. i think to make it big and not be a sellout, you cant be just a good band, you have to be somewhat unique in your style and also concept albums are a plus. either way who cares, people can listen to what they want because i generally dont give two shits about what the sheep do in their packs, just as long as they dont wander off and get eaten by a wolf. ehhh actually fuck it let the wolf eat em. this rambling has gone on way too long and i dont even know what im refering to now. alright peace.

I think they could have easily gone the Green Day route.

I dont think a band changing its sound necess. means they sell out, they could just be experimenting, which is all part of the art.

on the other hand if they change they lyrics to accomidate a coporation, or use their art to promote big business, i'd say, yeah thats selling out.

Its a hard choice.. stay with your music and pay off debt to the recording company for years.. maybe go bankrupt.. or let them install a pop friendly producer to shape you into a commercial success, and sell what rights you have to them so they can make even more money off your art.. the recording industry is a true scam.

Grateful Dead(not The Dead), Jim, Jimmy, and Janis never sold out-their families did after they died. Sublime, Skynyrd(before Ronnie died)...not that many I can think of but there's a few who haven't sold their expression of art to corporate enterprise. I'll think of more when the LSA's faded a bit. I'm just a tad tweaky right now.

Billy Corgan from the Smashing Pumpkins was offered a 6-figure sum (I don't know how much) to use the songs Tonight Tonight and I think Today, in an advertisement. I know Tonight Tonight was one but I can't totally remember the other one. Doesn't really matter.

The Sex Pistols didn't sell out (I don't think), heaps of bands haven't really. I think there are probably more good musicians who haven't, then who have. Though it would depend on your definition of "sell out".

A sellout band is one that changes what they are about, and why they make music. They change from making music to make music and express themselves to making music to increase their $$$ and popularity. :P

"..and mcs if you decide to push your views aside, and choose to ride whatevers popular the moment, then do it. I'll just make music thats dissin' it." - SweatShop Union

This song expresses my view on the topic very well:
